When will August flights come down?

We are planning our yearly trip to WDW. We plan on leaving one of the NYC airports on 8/24 and returning on 9/2. The flights right now are around $270/roundtrip. Last year we got $94 each way. The flights look empty. I do check daily. Any ideas when they will go down and can I put an alert on my account when they go down in price?

We are flying from Hartford / Springfield in August. We bought our tickets the day that JetBlue released them...about a month ago. That is the earliest we've ever purchased airfare. We paid $125 per person per way. I have checked the JetBlue prices every day since, and the price has jumped as high as $175 but has not gone below the $125 mark. One of the other flights later that day is now at $105 but the time would have been too late for us anyway.

Good luck! It's never easy figuring out when to buy airfare.

There is no rhyme or reason as to when airlines "change" their pricing. If we knew, they wouldn't make money. But believe me, I try. I have a WDW trip planned April 2014 and I started looking at airfare early. At the time, it was in the mid to high $400's (from California to MCO). I thought the prices would go down since I started looking so early. They didn't. It continued to rise and not only that but connections and times changed too. I'm certain because I wrote it all down. Ended up going with a different airline because the one I was initially watching had terrible times, terrible connections and many connections via SFO which we avoid at all costs. The ones I was watching (via Denver and Phoenix) not even offered anymore. My rule of thumb for sure now, if I'm comfortable with the cost, I'll jump on it. Especially after learning my lesson this time around.

We purchased our August 2014 airfare just a few days after JetBlue released them, so mid November-ish. We are flying from SYR on August 17th and returning August 31st.

Despite the flights being still very empty, costs have increased by $100 pp round trip since we purchased our tickets.

Costs were much higher this time than for the previous two Augusts. 40% higher in our case.

I'm actually pretty jealous you have found them for so cheap. We are going 8/8 through the 24th and leaving out of Newark. We are only finding 1775 for four-which works out to over 400 a person! I'd be so happy to find 270!

Same with us. We are flying JetBlue, and prices were $1400 for three of us (non-stop flights). We saved $400 by redeeming True Blue points (so our actual out of pocket cost was only $1000) but still :crazy2: . More than I had hoped to pay!! (and more than we have paid for the last two Augusts :rolleyes2)

I have found that often Jet Blue and Southwest are cheapest when they are first released. They may have an occasional sale but usually the best best it to grab them when they first come out.

You didn't mention which airline you are watching/hoping for.

But I agree with the others -- the prices may not come down as that is a popular travel time.

SWA will have their birthday sale the 3rd week of june. It covers the last week of Aug till Dec but you have to fly Tue or Wed.
