When to look for 2006 rental car rates?

I've been searching for rental car rates for August 2006 for about 2 weeks. So far, all the rates I've seen are very high. I guess I'm spoiled; I'm paying $177 for a 6 day rental throught National EA over New Year's, and I'm looking for the same price range for the first week of August 2006.

To all of our transportation experts: will rates drop between now and then, or am I stuck with high rates?

Last year I also started my annual quest for the best rate about 6 months prior to our June trip. I went with National and the price fluctuated but generally trended down. Each time it went down I booked a new reservation and cancelled the old one. By the time I left, the 11 day minivan rental was over $200 cheaper than where it started. I'll be gearing up in a month or so for next June but so far I haven't seen any attractive rates.

They should be coming out with some discounts soon. Most of the discounts are valid until 12/31/05. Check out Mousesavers and also play around on the websites periodically. We are going next June, I have booked a car rental with Alamo for now. I will play around to see if the prices go down. I also will book and cancel if the price goes down. Keep checking and check on other days. If they are like airlines, certain days drop in price.
