When Special or Platinum Edition DVD's are released, how long do they stay out?

Is it a set amount of time or does it vary with each movie? I need to make sure I grab some of them before they go back in the vault for another 10 years. I do plan on having kids within the next 10 years and want to make sure I have all of the classics. (Okay, and I want them for my own personal viewing pleasure as well )

I am not sure how long but I do know that they will give a date and they show commercials saying "so and so is going back in the vault make sure to get your copy by ________ before it is not available for another 10 years"
