I am headed to Disney the week of 9/18/2017 and staying at the Contemporary Resort (VERY EXCITED). When is the best time to buy my airline tickets for this? I was looking around middle to late May.

It really depends on where you are flying from, etc. I think the best time for domestic flights is around 54 days out. I booked about three weeks ago for our May trip. I think the key strategy is book it when you think the price is reasonable and don't look back.

I recommend using kayak or an app called hopper for determining when to pull the trigger. So much is dependent on your home airport, time of day that you are traveling and airline preferences. I bought my tickets for October on the first day that Southwest announced their schedule last month. I have not seen it go down since that day.

I think it really depends on your preferences most. I like to fly Delta (from MN, only Delta or Sun Country fly direct to MCO) and we have a Delta credit card, so we earn miles and get free checked bags. Because of those two preferences, we don't have a ton of flexibility, and price does not seem to fluctuate as much if you are very specific. I also look at how full the plane is for the specific flight I want (you can usually do this through the airline web site as you try to book). That gives me some idea if the plane is getting full and the price is unlikely to drop.
If you have more flexibility, particularly if you are willing to have a layover, then kayak can be very helpful. Just be careful that you check AM/PM and how long the layover is. I got burned once not realizing that our flight left at 11PM (not AM) and had a 12 hour layover. Not a surprise that that's a cheap flight! :)

I will be flying

Thanks for the info. I will look into using one of these.
