When/How to move baby to real bed?

We moved our oldest out of the crib when she was 2 yrs, 1 month old because her twin bed came in (and baby #2 was due in a few months so we wanted transition time).

I put the railing up along one side & her bed was against the wall on the other side & for the time being I put the crib mattress on the floor just in case.

She did fine.

DS moved out of the crib when he was 2 years, 4 months old because baby #3 was due in the next month or so.

He went to a twin also but a mattress & boxspring on the floor since I had to wait to buy him a bed until after baby #3 was born because I needed to know if it was a boy or girl & if it was a boy then he & the baby would move to the bigger room & get a bunk bed (but it was a girl so no moving was involved).

Baby #3 is 13 months & I am not ready for her to come out yet. She hasn't climbed (yet) & hopefully won't. But I am thinking at around 2 1/2 she will get a bed & I can be crib, changing table & dresser free (it is a set) then...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Oh but for vacations the kids have slept in the bed with us. Either in the same bed if it is a King or if it is 2 Queens then we each get a kid. I don't know what we will do with 3 kids.

We moved our DS into his big boy bed the night of his 2nd birthday. We had second DS on the way and we made it a big deal for a big boy on his b-day. I think he fell out once and we kept pillows on the floor next to his bed for few weeks. The only issue we really had was that now he could escape his room and come into our room or just wander upstairs. Our pediatrician suggested that we put one of those spring baby gates up in his doorway with the door open. So that is what we have done since - he might walk around his room some, getting books to read or whatever, but he always climbs into bed and sleeps there. In the mornings he will often sit in there awake "reading", playing, or singing to himself for a bit then goes to the gate and states "Mommy come get me!" when he's ready.
