When do you go back to school Aug 09?

Hi folks,

I'm trying to pick dates for our next big vacation, and the school calendar for our district is not out yet. Our schools usually go back the last week of August with the second week of school starting with Labor Day. For 2009 though, Labor day falls on Sept 7th (the monday before being Aug 31st). After a quick glance at some other district calendars, I see some schools going back on Thurs the 27th (rather than Monday 24th). This really creates a dilemma for school districts -- do you start early (two weeks before Labor Day) or late (week before Labor day, which is Aug 31) or somewhere in between? We usually don't see the new calendar until March... and I want to book my trip now!

So let's take a poll: Tell me when you go back to school in 09 and where you're located. We are in CT.

That is how it usually is here but we are just next door to you in RI.

Here in Mass. we go back the Tuesday before Labor Day weekend. That way they get 4 full days in before the holiday weekend.

we usually start 2 weeks before labor day in my district. They don't publicly put out the calendar here until the February of the previous school year but you can usually contact the district office to find the calender for the next couple of years. Our district currently has the calender out until 2011 if you call them and ask them.

Won't know for sure until Spring but, in my state, school cannot start before the week of 8/21. This year we started on 8/25.

In Texas, the earliest we can start is the 4th Monday in August. Since they started this policy, that is when we have started and I am sure that it will be the same this year!

My kids go back September 9th. The wed after Labor Day. I am in NJ.

Florida has a new law that we cant start earlier than 2 weeks before labor day. Since most all of the schools want to start as soon as possible in order to get the most days in before standardized testing, almost all FL schools will start right at that 2 weeks before labor day date.

I just checked the proposed calendar for our part of VA. They go back Sept 8 but don't get out of school till June 18th!! omg, that's late. We will melt to go to school that long!!!

Michigan's law is school starts day after Labor Day

I'm up in Southern NH. This year we started the Tuesday after Labor Day. Next year, because Labor Day is so late, we will start the Tuesday before Labor Day.

This is what the district website states:

School for students shall begin the day after Labor Day when Labor Day falls on Spetember 1, 2, or 3. School for students shall begin the Tuesday before Labor Day when Labor Day falls on Spetember 4, 5, 6, or 7.
