When and What's Happening at Hilton Head Island and the Low Country in July, 2020
Hilton Head Island has basically reopened with almost all businesses open. One exception is that movie theaters still remain closed due to crowd size restrictions still in place as ordered by Henry McMaster, Governor or SC.
Due to the increasing COVID-19 positive test numbers over the past 6 weeks, the Hilton Head Island Town Council enacted a mask policy in an emergency meeting help this morning.
Last week the Mayor announced this meeting and included the proposed ordinance, asking for public comment over the weekend before the vote. With a outpouring of concern by local residents, the details of the ordinance were updated.
The original draft would require all employees of any business operating on Hilton Head to wear a mask when around other employees or customers and would require customers to wear facial covering in grocery stores and Pharmacies.
The updated ordinance which was passed by the Town Council this morning makes face masks mandatory for customers in all commercial spaces, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, retail stores, and bars.
The ordinance also requires employees in all commercial spaces to wear a face mask at all times when they are in the same place as the public or near another employee.
Any person who violates the face mask rule would be guilty of a misdemeanor, according to the ordinance. A misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of up to $500 or 30 days in jail, according to the town code.
Since Hilton Head does not have its own police force, the Beaufort County Sheriff, who provides law enforcement for Hilton Head Island, has stated that he will be able to provide enforcement of this ordinance.
This ordinance goes into effect at 11:59PM on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Traditional public outdoor fireworks displays have been canceled for July 4 but are allowed on private property providing they meet state and local restrictions.
The HH beaches are all open and the morning low this morning was 81 at 7am. The ocean temp is 82.
Enjoy!
