We will be leaving for Disney in 14 days and may need to rent a wheelchair.

I'm waiting to see if I herniated a disc in my back (already have had 4 back surgeries) and am pretty sure I will need another.

After being on my feet too long I can barely walk.

My oldest dd severely sprained her ankle in July and is waiting to see if she has a torn ligament and may need surgery. We will be quite the pair on this trip.

We were thinking about renting a wheelchair to share as each one of us may need to use it at different times of the day.

Does anyone know the cost of rental? What happens if we go to more then one park a day? Do we have to pay to rent again each park and each day? Would love to hear recommendations.

Thanks

If you go to the sticky at the top you can find the info you're looking for, or as always, the lovely Chesire Figment will come along and the link you need is in his siggy. :thumbsup2

I believe that you do not have to pay twice for a chair. You pay once in the morning, then just keep your receipt because you'll need to show it at the different parks later in the day.

You might want to look at renting off-site just because it may be a more comfortable chair, you won't have to worry about them running out (which I think is doubtful, but could happen), plus you have it in line for the bus back to the resort and at the resorts. :woohoo:

You might also want to look into an ECV. It would give you more freedom. No one needs to push you and you can keep up with your party. I rented one on my last trip there and it was a godsend. I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!! It may cost more, but save you more headaches in the long run. You can find links to off-site rental companies in the stickies posted on the main disabilities page.

Here is a copy of an email from the company we used one summer for my FIL's w/c. It was the best price of the 4 or 5 that I researched. No problems whatsoever. It was waiting for us at the bell station when we arrived and we left it there on check out. It went everywhere with us. They were professional and a pleasure to deal with.

"Our office can make available a wheelchair rental for your vacation to Florida. We will deliver the wheelchair to your hotel 1 day prior to your arrival. The weekly rental rate for the wheelchair will be $58.58. This rate will include delivery - pickup and local sales tax. What is the weight of the person using the wheelchair? Please fill out the attached rental form and fax it to 407.447.5312 to reserve wheelchair rental.. Please email our office should you have any additional questions..

just so you are aware, if your daughter is not over 18 yrs old, she may not be allowed to drive the ECV. The park rental ones and most from the off-site companies specify in the rental agreement that only adults may drive them.

Other than that, I agree with the other posters about renting from off-site being more comfortable and convenient.

If you do rent in the parks, keep your receipt. If you leave the park and come back later or if you park hop, you can get a new wheelchair by showing your receipt. You can do the same thing with ECVs, but they are in more limited supply and there may not be any when you get to the park.

I broke my right ankle 3 weeks before my trip to Disney and ended up renting a transport chair (lightweight travel wheelchair) here in Toronto and bringing it with us. It was $45.00 for a one month rental. It was great! There was no way I could hobble around the parks on crutches so the chair really came in handy.

We drove so renting it beforehand wasn't a problem, it just fit in our trunk. For us, it was much easier than having to rent one in each park but that may not be an option for you if you're flying.

Just an idea!

I agree with the recommendations to rent from off-site so that you will have the chair at all times.

However, I'm not sure the transport chair is a good idea. While it would be much easier to move in and out of a vehicle, if you're using wdw buses this doesn't matter much. We got talked into a transport chair once and it was much harder to push than a regular chair, plus, the person in the chair has no ability to control the chair which is not a good feeling and means that with two people who have injuries you'll have to push as well as walk so the riding time may be done in quickly.
