Wheelchair Guests

How does Disneyland handle wheelchair guests now at Disneyland? I was reading what they have online but some things confused me. "Depending on the attraction, the Guest will either wait in the standard queue or receive a return time at the attraction based on the current wait time." I know they have the new system where you return at a certain time which makes complete sense but what rides would one who is in a wheelchair wait in the standard queue? Also "Does a Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter need DAS?

My grandfather doesn't necessarily NEED a wheelchair meaning he isn't wheelchair bound, he can walk but not very well (he is in great pain) would we need to get DAS or can we just go up to a ride queue with him in the wheelchair?

You don't have to be completely wheel chair bound to use one. Many of the wheel chair people as well as the scooter people use the "wheels" for endurance issues, not because they're completely immobile. So no, you won't need a DAS.

It's basically the newer rides that have queues which allow wheel chair (and scooter people) to stay in the regular lines. Haunted Mansion, the Tower of Terror and Splash Mountain and Thunder Mtn Railroad have stairs in their lines so wheel chair guests need to go in through the exit. The Matterhorn lines are narrow and wind around tight turns, so they also need a separate line. Space Mtn also has a separate waiting line. So does Pirates of the Caribbean.

Examples of newer rides that are wheelchair friendlier include Soaring, Buzz Lightyear (tho they'll take you through an alternate door at the very beginning of the ride), Toy Story Midway Mania, the Monorail (tho they allow only one wheel chair at a time.) The queue for Finding Nemo is wheel chair friendly, but there are stairs getting into and out of the submarines. They do have a special viewing area for guests who can't handle the stairs.

Also make sure you use the wheel chair seating at Fantasmic! and World of Color.

The fire marshal is pretty strict about how many handicapped guests are on a ride at the same time. If they have to evacuate a ride in a hurry, they're limited in how many guests they can quickly carry to the exit. Depending on how many wheel chairs are waiting, the main queue has been known to move faster than the handicapped line.

No, he doesn't need a DAS, and wouldn't qualify for one, based on your description. If the regular line is wheelchair accessible, you can all just get in line. If it isn't accessible there will be an alternate entrance. It is this alternate entrance (frequently it's the exit) where they would give you a return ticket with a time on it. Pick up a copy of the Disneyland guide for guests with Disabilities. It will tell you which rides have alternate exits.

as other have said he dose not need a DAS card I would go to GR and talk to them about what rides he might be able to do what ones he needs a different entrance to and what one he dose not.

and most do not need wheel chair or ECV in every day life but do at disney

I did not know that but when I think about it that makes perfect sense.

It should be somewhere on the DLR website. You should find them with the park maps at the park entrances, or at Guest Relations.

Ok so if we get a return time is there a certain amount of time we have to wait before getting a return time for another ride? Like fastpass? If so how do they keep track of that? Through your tickets like fastpass?

I think you can only have one return time at a time.

The wheelchair return times will be "put" on your ticket electronically. Since the return time is essentially holding your place in line, you may only hold 1 active return time and must use it before you can get another (I suppose if you change your mind you could ask them to cancel it). You are welcome and encouraged to use FP as well. That is separate. I believe you can pull another FP in 2 hours or after it has been used, whichever comes first.

Don't forget - Fast Passes and Return Times are not connected. My best advice is to stop at Guest Relations and have them mark the "Guests with Disabilities" map with which rides/attractions offer return times and which are W/C accessible. We found this tremendously helpful.
