My 9 year old nephew just had surgery on his leg and may need a wheelchair for our upcoming vacation to WDW. I saw on the Disney World website that some resorts have wheelchairs available for their guests. Does anyone know if Kidani is one of those resorts? If so, how do we go about reserving one? Is it first come, first served?

Thanks!

Most of the resorts have them, they are issued on a first come first serve basis. You will need to ask at the front desk. It is possible that they may not have any left though, so if you really think he may need one at the resort, you may want to look into renting from an outside company.

First come, first serve. The nice thing about AKV is that you also have the resources of Jambo house available so between the two you may be fine. If not there are several off site rental places and I think you'd find one that could deliver a chair fairly quickly if you needed to go that route. And the thing about the off site places is that you'd have a choice of chair sizes. The chairs sizes at the resorts vary.

Thanks for the info. I think we will be better off renting one from an outside company, as you suggested. Off to the DISabilities forum FAQ!

We were told at our resort once (not sure which one we were staying at, may have been SSR) that the complimentary wheelchairs are supposed to be used only at the resort...in other words, not to be taken and used in the parks.

We ended up renting a scooter from offsite anyway.

We just got back on Sunday. We rented a wheelchair from Walker Mobility-From Mon-Sat it cost us $54 total.
They drop at bell services and pick it back up from bell services.
All you need to do is fill in the order form online and they take care of the rest. really simple and then we did not have to worry about trying to get a wheelchair at any of the theme parks.

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. Post 2 has information about renting wheelchairs and ECVs.

For a 9 year old, you may want to rent a smaller wheelchair or a special needs stroller. Unless he is very tall, the adult size wheelchairs for rent most places will be too big for him. Apple rents 16 inch wide wheelchairs, which are smaller than the wheelchairs for rent in the parks or from most of the other companies.
