What's your secret to getting the outside Christmas lights in a straight line?

I spent the afternoon outside on a ladder while enjoying 15 degree blowing snow and when I plugged the lights in I was utterly dissapointed. We drive by all these houses where the lights are all in a perfectly straight line and I can't figure it out. I think next year we are going to swap to rope lights.

for perfectly straight lights you must put a clamp for every single light. Not just along the wires, every few feet.

were you hanging them along a gutter or something else perfectly straight? Time to go buy a few hundred clips... DW just got back with a bag of them, says she can not find most of them from last year.

MIkeeee

My husband has some tool on a pole that does it. I dont know what its called but he doesnt even have to go up the ladder and we have 20 ft ceilings on the front of the house.

I can't hang them of the gutters, out house is 2 story and I don't have a ladder that high. At least the front is vinyl sides so I use the clips. I should pick up some more. I'm still thinking of rope lights :)
