If you were going to start you own business, which kind would you like to have? I realize that that is a tough question in a tough economy. I think that if I could have whatever I wanted it would be something like a Berlitz school franchise. I wanted to attend to study Spanish once, but it was just too expensive. Has anyone ever attended any of their schools? What did you think of it? Which language did you study?

At a more practical level, I guess that I would own a little grocery store because they get buyers, not browsers.

I am livin' the dream. Same dream I've had since I was 7 years old. I own a horse farm. We board horses, train, do riding lessons and horse shows. DH and I run the business (me full-time and him part-time). It's a labor of ove and a dream come true!

It makes me so happy to hear about people who realize their dreams! I wish you much success and happiness always with it!

I would love to have a children's book store, exactly like the "Shop Around the Corner" in You've Got Mail. I would love to have story time, princess tea parties and secret pirate meetings. Of course big box stores ie Fox Books make this a hard endeavor.

I have always dreamed of having a "Happy Days" type of restaurant, place for teens to hang out and for older people like me to come and reminisce. I would like to have 50's style tables/chairs (chrome) and booths lining the walls, lots of 50's and 60's memorabilia on the walls. Serve up diner food, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, Nachos, other sandwiches, etc. Old fashioned ice cream parlour along one wall with sodas and milkshakes, and cherry and chocolate Cokes. And of course a nice juke box and even a small corner with a wood floor for dancing. I'm not sure how well it would "go over" though so I've never really explored the real possibility of doing it. Plus at my age I don't think I'd really want to be tied down to a business like that. But it's fun to think/dream about it. :)

Maybe a restaurant...and not the kind Gordon Ramsey comes and visits

Event Planning.

or maybe a restaurant, i have no idea what the concept would be but i know the food would be good. :thumbsup2

and i wouldn't hate being a travel agent.

That sounds wonderful!!!

It's actually kind of similar to what I've dreamed about. I would like to board pets or maybe house sit pets or something similar. We have businesses around here that do that but it seems impractical for me to get involved. I just keep on daydreaming.

No matter what type of business you want, be sure you have TONS of money. And preferably NOT from a loan. I'm talking about enough money to keep your home and business going for a few years.

I had a business, my own chiropractic practice. It lasted 5 years, though 2 years of those were spent being a traveling chiro, covering other peoples' practices (no overhead). I couldn't get a loan when I opened my OWN practice because I asked for "too little", and then the female banker said "so are you getting married soon? who will pay this when you default?" I never made enough to support myself without asking my mom for funds (which she was more than happy to give). Though to be honest I wasted a lot of money during that time...probably could have easily done without a car once I stopped doing house-calls and once my apartment and office were in walking distance, probably didn't need all those "I'm 20something and need to go out!" nights.

Anyway, closed up shop 5 years after graduation, 3 years after opening my own doors. Not enough money to support myself.

So no matter what your dream is, be able to fund it and your personal life for a good long time.

I have few.

One is a chain of food counters at train stations, and commuter cities that sells good, nutritious food either to take away, or to heat up at home. Good home style food using local, seasonal produce that is at an accetable calorie level.

the other is simlear to a previous poster. A proper 50's style Americana diner that is open 24/7. It will buttermilk pancakes, hot dogs, toasties, milkshakes etc. It will also have a good selection of cocktails. The kind of place you could eat at during the day. Or start/end a night out at.

I would also like to look at opening my own independant production company making/buying small indie films, as well as being able to distribute them. Amusingly this is a more realistic dream business than the ones above.

I want to own a cupcake bakery! I'm not a great cook, but I make the BEST cupcakes and I would just love to own a little store! I'd specialize in cupcakes but sell other kinds of cake too, plus coffee. I'd have big comfy sofas so people could come and relax! I always thought maybe I'd do this if I came into a lot of money one day, so we'll have to wait and see!

I have zero desire to be a business owner.

I can't even think of one single thing I would want to do... well...

...If I HAD to do something, I would open a daycare from home, but with 5 or fewer kids. I have an empty, finished basement and it would be perfect!

We sell a line proprietary products that my wife invented. It's all internet sales so we're free to sleep in, stay up late, and travel when we wish. I had corporate jobs until 2008 and I feel really lucky to have found her!

DH wants to open up a new and used video game store after he retires. He started his job young, so he will retire young.

I have always thought a keychain store would be cool to have. Assorted keychains.

:)

I'd like to go into consulting work with an emphasis on adult education and motivational speaking.

Maybe a bookstore, giftshop, or Hallmark store for myself. That will never happen, by the way. For DH, music...songwriting, music store, that sort of thing, I would imagine.

I have been in the construcion buis for over 25yrs.My specialty is fiberglass insulation, custom mirrors, custom shower units and wire shelving.
I almost took the plunge to start my own 3yrs ago just before the housing marcket took A nose dive.My wife told me not too.thank goodnees I listened.

But I worked for this company doing sales and seen the profit margin after taxes and overhead and let me tell you there is great money to be maid.
When the marcket ever turns I WILL do it.I love the work.

My dad had a roofing buisness for 40yrs and the two things I learned from him is 1-I hate roofing and 2-just because you own your own buisness don't make you the boss. You still gotta answer to the customer..

I'd like to open a cookie bakery, called "The Cookie Jar" or something equally kitschy. I'd love to open it right across the street from the local high school. It would have little tables in it, and I'd also serve hot chocolate, coffee, etc.
