What's wrong with people?

As I walked past our local recreation field the other day, there was a team of 8/9 year olds doing some football, (soccer) training. Being a football nut, I stopped for a while to watch, as I sometimes do. I'd been there about five minutes, when a man, one of the parents I assume, jogged over to me and asked what I was doing.

"Watching the kids play football." I said.
"Why would you want to do that?"
"Because I like watching kids play football."
"What are you, some sort of pervert?"

I was speechless, totally stunned. I just shook my head and walked away.

Are people so paranoid, that you're considered a pervert for watching kids play sport? From now on, I'll just walk by with my eyes glued to the pavement. Another of life's little pleasures that I can't enjoy anymore.

I think it's paranoia for someone to be affronted with such a statement. He wasn't hiding in the bushes or sitting in his car. Even so, if I were a sports fan, especially of kids sports, I'd probably stop occasionally to watch a game. And hopefully some paranoid nutjob wouldn't make a big deal of it.

I teach swim lessons during the summer and I've had parents complain about other parents taking pictures during the lessons. Even though parent B was taking a picture of their own child, parent A was afraid their kid would be in the picture and that just wasn't OK. It just amazed me.
