What's with the auto-plyaing video ads on the screen?

I wonder if the browser solution might be a coincidence, as I currently am not seeing the ads at all in the same browser I have always used to access the boards; and, probably not a coincidence, the boards are actually running better today.

Wonder if that's why WebMaster Will was in the studio yesterday?

Here is something weird I am also noticing. On the ads I am getting on the bottom I am getting several for Dis threads with random art work as click bait, these threads are random....Some haven't been posted on for a decade, some are oddball ones, some were quite controversial and were locked years ago, but it's seems to be a very select .001% (if that) that keep cropping up over and over, "Sad News at the Contemporary" for example is one of them that comes back over and over.

How are these selected? It is an algorithm? . I have five now, three are locked threads, one is the farting thread (on it's path to thread of the year) and then one that has to do with a personal matter.

I get the same 4 or 5 disboards threads, the one about Trump at HOP, one about Gaston and one about a disturbing EVC accident. They are all from doubleclick.net. No videos right now but I had 2 at work today.

Um... I don't like ads and commercials like everyone else, but the people who run DISBoards need to make money too. Monetizing a forums such as this one where there are thousands of users can pay for all the hardware and maintenance and upgrades, and license renewals, and maybe put a little cash into the pockets of the moderators for a job well done. We should be thankful that those ads are there instead of finding ways to disable them! You can run the ad, but nothing says you have to watch it, and you can always turn down your volume. Just sayin'.

I don't have any problem with ads. The things I have mentioned are ads that freeze the entire page to make it unloadable and ads to threads that are locked, and locked for a reason, either fighting, advocating illegal activities, employee issues, etc
I just thought the Dis would appreciate knowing that. Why not have ads that drive traffic to the 20th anniversary event, Ryan's rumor round ups or dining reviews? Instead I have an ad linking to a post from 10 YEARS ago on the community board why some diser left their spouse? What?

Problem is that it just starts running out of no where. It took me half a dozen times to figure out where it was coming from. Right now there is an ad running with the sound muted. Some don't start that way.

The Disboards also don't want to make the site so annoying that people dont come back.

Yea for me every disboards link is to an old closed thread. The same five old closed threads EVERY page.

Yeah I think it's been around for ages, it just felt like it was time to ask why since it often leads to locked threads of darker days of the boards or a podcaster's life.
One bad thing is that it uses seemingly random art work unless there is a video or a picture in the thread and then it uses that in the ad.
So say 8 years ago you posted a pic of your kid to share a hairstyle or t-shirt or a you tube video by someone who has nothing to do with the Dis, now that pic is plastered on everyone's feed as an advertisement for the Dis.
I guess I am old fashioned to say, that feels a little creepy.
The internet is forever. *sigh

I think the reason they get picked is that they have tons of posts so therefor tons of "hits" and therefor must be a popular thread.
