ok I'ive looked on the DVC boards and to be honest way to much info ,can someone explain to me the value in renting pts and how it all works ? We're planning a late sept early oct 10 day stay at the world., Can you still get free dining if its available to the general public ect? If you done it we would really love to hear how you made out ,thanks everyone :thumbsup2

You can't get the free dining if your rent points. Simply put your are paying an individual for the use of their DVC points. Sounds like an okay idea under the right conditions. If free dining was an option, I would not rent points ... just my opinion.

Hi,
I have my own points, plus I have rented points from someone else. The advantage with renting points is you can stay in much more expensive accomodations for less. We stayed in the Animal Kingdom Lodge Concierage in a 1 br. It was awesome! It cost 790.00 per night, but 30 points. The points were 8 dollars per point. We never, ever would have spent that kind of money for a room, but it was incredible. The issue with renting points is it is a leap of faith for both of you. The member services won't speak to non members--so you have to trust the person you are renting from. The dining plan is never free, but you can buy it for 40.00 for over 9 and 20 for under 9. The other thing that is hard to get used to is you don't get housekeeping everyday. I think it is worth it for upper end accomodations. Good luck.

I remember renting points from a person five years ago and it ended up costing me a lot of money.......in the form of buying 150 points at VWL when I got home. I had gotten the DVC bug immediately. As has been said, renting points can be a huge savings at certain times of the year. I don't know how lucky you will be at getting/renting points at $8, as 11-12 seems to be the going rate. If someone has to get rid of their points before they expire, then you can get a better deal

It can be a lot cheaper especially if you are looking at a one-bedroom or two-bedroom vs. a studio. These rooms can cost $1200 per night if you're paying cash, but we got a two-bedroom for 8 nights for a total of $3000. And we paid more for the points than most people because we wanted to secure a certain type of room right at the 11-month window. If you're only looking to rent a studio, you can rent points, or hold out for a Disney deal which often works out about the same amount of money. Problem is, there is no guarantee of a Disney deal at the time you want.

Free dining may or may not be a better deal. If you purchase the regular dining plan for two adults for a week, thats about $600 (give or take a little). So figure out what you'd be saving by renting points vs. rack rates with free dining. If you have 4 or 5 people in one room, free dining makes more sense - not so much with only two people in the room. You have to figure it out every possible way to know you're getting the best deal!

i rented pts for 9.00 pp, I did it for 2 reasons, i wanted to stay delux for a lower price, and i wanted to experience DVC to see if i like it, no special disney offers are valid if you rent pts.
all in all, it is costing me the same amount that i paid to stay value 2 years ago.

We stayed in a BWV Studio with a gorgeous boardwalk view for US$149/night by renting points (standard room would've been $122/night). It's a substantial savings. You can add the dining plan, but can't take advantage of free dining.

To correct some misinformation in the thread, 2010 dining plan rates start at $41.99/adult and $11.99/child (higher rates for busier seasons).

Hi we just got back from a 17 night stay on the 15 of Dec
10 nights free dining Port Orleans
4 nights first time point rental
I booked the points back in march for the dec trip...paid 440 for 4 nights SV Mon-Thur this is the cheapest time to rent. I sent a money order on the word of a post on DVC:) thought we could handle the risk. It worked out great I loved it. We now have a trusted DVC contacted to rent from.
We also stayed 3 night Portafino at Universal this was a huge disappointment
I do not think this is a 4 diamond hotel. Hard Rock was very nice when we stayed 7 years ago. I would try and add a couple of days to your trip for your first rental and see how you like it.
