What's Up with the MU Hats at Disneyland

Last week the MU hats were plentifully available at Disneyland, DCA, and World of Disney for $19.95.
They must have realized the popularity and brought them back cuz there were none last Labor Day weekend. We looked all over and even had cast members calling around looking for us..

I noticed it too and assumed that it was a Grad Night giveaway - guess not!

I remember being in Junior High and High School and there was a certain Mickey baseball hat that was popular. It was kind of a collegiate preppy font.

YES. When I was in high school we all had Mickey baseball hats. There was solid color and plaid, with just a Mickey face on the front. I'll have to find a pic.

I do think the MU hats are cute. Maybe I should get one! :earsgirl:

I got one at WDW early last year, no one was wearing it. Went to DLR in Oct and everybody had it.

Hmmm....so I went straight to the experts....Urban Dictionary.

Mutual Understanding
A term used mostly by Filipinos for two people who obviously like each other, but have not yet committed to a relationship. So both parties are still free to go out on dates with other people.

It's a vague area between being friends and boyfriend/girlfriend.

Basically, it's like an open relationship.

(Shortcut: MU)
Guy1: Dude, is Jess your girlfriend?
Guy2: Nah, we just have a mutual understanding.

Doesn't sound very Disney-like. :rolleyes1

OMG! That is funny. Had not heard that term but it makes perfect sense.

After my first day there last month I had to check the price because I assumed they were significantly cheaper since there were so many of them around but as someone above mentioned they were $19.95, same as most other (better looking in my opinion) hats.

My wife is 47 and bought one when we were there. After she bought it we started noticing a ton of them around. :) She likes that it's Disney but not overtly so.

Another point is that the hat itself was a major thing in the movie. So, unlike most of the Disney caps, the MU one is more of a real prop than most other merchandise items you can get.

My 20 yo daughter has one. We were in WDW in the summer heat and both bought a hat to go on the boats. She picked the Monsters University one, not only because it was the cutest option, but also because the Monsters went to college the same year as she did, so she felt a connection to the movie. There are several great themes going on that older kids can understand... A little like the emotional connection that I have with Toy Story 3 and why I can't watch it without crying... Kids around college age probably like MU better than some of us...
When she wears the hat, she always gets lots of compliments from older kids...

We just got back from WDW and my 18 year old daughter who just graduated from high school wanted that hat. They were hard to find as they are out of stock in a lot of stores. We used the shop parks app to find one in Epcot at Pin Central. The cast member there said it was the 4th MU hat she had sold in the last 10 minutes. I guess they are popular with the kids who are heading off to college.
