DH and I are really wanting to buy into DVC, but want to save up most if not all of the up-front cost and finance very little or nothing. So, no calling the guide today to get a contract. What's the latest we could buy (looking at BLT) and still get 2009 points? We are planning an extended family trip in June 2010 and would like to bank/borrow points to use for that vacation if we can swing it in time.

It depends on the UY that you choose. Typically, if you buy sometime within the UY, you will get current points.

To get enough points to bank and borrow for June 2010, you need a UY that starts before your vacation, so Feb, March, April or June so that you would still be eligible for 2009 points. So, with any of those UY's, you should be able to add on a month or so before the 2010 UY starts and get the points. I have heard (and someone will correct me if I am wrong), they typically let you bank points outside the banking window with new contracts and add ons (providing they have the points still).

However, the biggest piece I see, though, would be getting the reservation that you want at BLT for June 2010 if you wait to buy after you have reached the 7 month mark for the trip and everyone is able to book there.

This was the reason that we bought in now, knowing that a lot of people were returning from their summer trips as new BLT members. We were afraid the availability for our trip next June would be very low, if those same members were summer travelers booking for next summer.

Don't be afraid to call and ask your guide for the "Official" answer to your question..:goodvibes

Why not buy now and finance for only a year? The current incentives will be expiring soon, and that would give you the flexibility to start making ressies for next year's trip. If you pay off in a year, instead of waiting to purchase, you may end up being ahead, particularly if another price increase rolls around before then. Good luck..:)

We bought at the end of November 2007 and have a December Use Year. We got our 2006 points when signing the paperwork, which they allowed us to bank to sweeten the deal and then a few days later we got our 2007 points.

Thanks for the responses. Just to make sure I have this correct.....

I am wanting to make sure I get my full 50 years worth of points. So, if I bought a Feb UY, for example, I would get points in Feb 2010, Feb 2011, Feb 2012, all the way until Feb 2060. Whereas if someone bought a Nov UY, they would get point in Nov 2009, Nov 2010, etc., until Nov 2059. Right? The reason I'm asking is that DH and I looked at AKV when it first opened, but decided we didn't want to purchase without looking into it more. When we went back a couple of years later and looked again, the points were roughly the same price, but we had lost 2 years worth of points by waiting. I want to make sure I don't lose out on a year or two worth of points because I'm dragging my feet.

That's a good point, too, about buying before the 7-month mark. I guess if we don't get to buy before then (which would be this Nov - wow that's soon!) then we could look at other DVC resorts. But it's definitely more incentive to try to save up faster and make the purchase sooner rather than later.

I wish DH and I could decide to buy now and just finance short-term. But, we recently remodeled part of our house and are paying that off. That's our only debt, and we should have it paid off by the end of the year. It's hard to decide if we want to take anything on after we get that paid off. Decisions, decisions!
