FYI you don't need Car seats on busses, you do need them for taxi and uber. You don't need to "drag along" a car seat unless you are going via car our van.
I use public transportation in San Francisco pretty often (subway, bus, street car) with 1-3 small children and the only thing I have had to bring was the stroller (which is a pain enough on a bus to be sure). If I take uber or a taxi children legally have to be in a car seat which is why I don't use those. I don't know the rules/laws in other states but in California you don't need a car set on a bus or train.
