What's the big deal about Moana 2?

Are all the showings in your area sold out? I thought I'd take my DS5 tomorrow to see it, but EVERY showing is sold out.The very few available we wouldn't be able to sit next to each other. Some seats in IMAX are available, but I really don't feel like spending $17 a ticket, especially since my dad would be coming too. Is everyone just excited there's a new movie out that's not a remake of something? I don't remember the first one very much.

a) It's really good.

b) It's a holiday weekend. (Heck...I'm just wanting to check something and I'm in a virtual line to get into the AMC app currently!)

c) There's not much else family-friendly out right now. (Wicked really isn't little-kid-friendly.)

First one was a HUGE hit. It somehow was the #1 streamed movie last year even though it came out in 2016! Everyone with kids is taking them to see the second one ASAP. It's not going to be as good as the first one, but it will print money like you won't believe!

The movie critic this morning on our morning show said it wasn’t as good as the first one. The songs weren’t as catchy and he said he was trying to figure out the story line for the whole movie. He said it was originally supposed to be to be a series made for Disney +

He finished with if you like Frozen 2 you will like this one…lol

That said there is a lot of advertising for it and will attract kids and people that liked the first one.

I went to see it this afternoon. I absolutely loved the original Moana. While it was entertaining, it felt too disjointed. Also, there was no catchy music, like in the first one. I’m glad I saw it but it doesn’t begin to compare to the original. This will probably be the case, next month, when Mufassa, The Lion King, opens up at theaters.

I saw it today as well. I don't know how tough the tickets are to get, ours were purchased a couple of weeks ago

We went with kids/grandkids today. It was good. As with many sequels, I didn't think it was as good as the first. DGD (10) loved it. DGS (7) got a little bored. Most Disney movies in last several years seem to be more about showcasing "artistic technology" than a driving story line.

Are there other movies at the moment aimed at families with (young) children in your area?

First movie was popular, people hope the second is just as good. Which sequels rarily are. But people always have hope.

We saw it in IMax and paid $70 for 4 tickets.
We had been waiting for something kid friendly for our grandkids first movie theater experience.
Our granddaughter cried when the evil coconuts came on the screen and did not enjoy it until the nice scenes at the end.
Most of the showings at our theater are sold out.
I think it is more because it is the only kids movie than it being a fantastic film.

Moana has been a top 5 streamed movie (of any streaming service) every year that D+ has existed. This movie was going to make a bunch and be really busy this weekend regardless of how it was received critically with how many kids/families have watched the original.

It may be the show time. DD18 saw a 9:45pm showing on opening night. They bought tickets an hour or two in advance. That being said, they thought it was awful. It might grow on them. We saw the original in theaters and had to see it several times before we shifted from ehhh to liking it.

Is anyone able to tell me if the shiny crab from #1 is in this movie? My 7yo loves the crab and wants to know, lol. You can PM me if you don't want "spoil" it for others. ;)

Record weekend Box Office for the Industry.
Family over for the Holiday people want to get out of the house and away from them.

Same situation here. It was hard to get tickets. It was fine. The first one was much better. I had read something (not sure if it is true) that originally it was written as a tv show for Disney Plus and then turned into a movie. If that is true that makes a lot of sense. There was one whole plot line that just didn't get addressed. For a kids movie it was fine. Why is it so popular? well this time of year is always big at the movies. I also think that with Wicked being so popular there were many families that wanted to take their little kids to a movie.
