Ok, so the best scary movie I have seen in the last 10 years or so has been 1408. I LOVE this movie. It was smart and kept me guessing the whole time.

OMG...i loved 1408.
I normally refuse to watch anythign labeled as a "scary movie" but i love mary mccormack so i had to see it and i thought it was great.

I went to look up 1408 on Netflix, and which is recommended, the reg. or the unrated? The unrated has an alternate ending, and does not have the theatrical ending.

Over the last 10 years, most horror films have been letdowns. I miss the golden days of horror (Carrie, The Shining, The Exorcist). Nowadays, it's all too overly done with CGI effects. CGI ruins horror (imo). I want to see a really creepy, eerie film like back in the day.

But to answer the OP's question, probably 1408 or the television remake of The Shining (starring Stephen Weber from 'Wings")

Oh I didn't know there was a different version! I may have to check it out. I would probably get the unrated. I want to see it!

1408 was good, but I also really liked "The Skeleton Key" and "Identity."

What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. Very scary and very well done.

Doesn't really fit with the others, but Cloverfield scared the pants off both me and DH. The Ring was also pretty disturbing.

I liked "The Others" and "What Lies Beneath."

I also liked the movie "Ghost Story."

I almost didn't watch the Skeleton Key. My daughter watched it and said it wasn't any good. I'm SOOOO glad I decided to watch it and see for myself. I really liked it too.

Others I liked:
The Others
Population 436
Awake
The Orphanage (Foreign film, but oh so good)
The Eye (foreign one better, but the American one isn't bad either)
The Ring 1 and 2
The Last House on the Left (I think this was a remake)
The Haunting in Connecticut
Rose Red (4 plus hours, I believe it had been a mini series)
Saw movies (I think these get worse as they go though)
The Uninvited (though I loved the foreign version better)
Mr. Brooks
High Tension (this is foreign, but has been translated and spoken in English)
Frailty
Hard Candy
Harper's Island (this was a series, but was canceled after 1 season, it's a classic who done it)
The Fog

I know I could go on ad nauseum, but I'll stop here.

It's a bit older, but it was one of the most chilling movies I had ever seen (and is still my #1 favorite movie of any genre) - The Sixth Sense.

:thumbsup2

The 6th Sense
The Ring
Signs
The Others
The Strangers
The Orphanage
Blair Witch Project

I would include Paranormal Activity too. It was truly scary in a few scenes, but I think it's just getting a bit overhyped.

There hasn't been a truly "losing-sleep-due-to-scariness" movie since The Exorcist and the original Nightmare on Elm Street.

However, I found 28 Days Later to be disturbing...mainly because the zombies could run really fast. Historically that was always the saving grace with zombies...all you had to do was walk a little faster and you'd be fine!

I would add the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" to that list too, especially the opening scenes.

I wouldn't classify it as a horror but one of my favorite scary movies is The Mothman Prophecies.

I really enjoy The Descent (2005). It made me throw my popcorn in the air in the first five minutes. Lately, I enjoyed Drag Me to Hell b/c it was like a throwback and very campy.

You guys have named ones that I love too, but forgot all about.

Others I can think of:
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
28 Days Later, AND, 28 Weeks Later
Slither (not my all time favorite, but I did like it)
House of Wax (I actually loved the one with Paris Hilton in it)
Ginger Snaps
Scream (bit older, but prolly my daughter and I's favorite horror series)
Wicker Man (most hate the remake, but I liked it)
Wrong Turn
Reaping (this one gets better with each viewing, you seem to pick up on more and more each time)

May (now, this is one I hated, but it has an awful lot of positive reviews on Netflix and it seems most people love it).

I don't really watch modern scary movies, I guess the best one I have seen was "Sixth Sense".

The ones that really scared the begeebers out of me were the ones my best friend and I watched when we were 12 years old staying together at night while our parents went out for the evening. We would tune in and watch the scary stuff. My favorites of that time gone by would be "The Birds" and "Night of the Living Dead".
