what's the benefit for buying 1 vs another resort?

We just bought 240pts for AKV. I have seen some posts about doing add ons at resorts other than your original one. What is the benefit to this if the points are transferable among resorts? And if we choose to add on later, should we just attempt to get them for the resort that offers the cheapest points?

Points are not transferable among resorts. You will have the 11 month priority only for the points at that resort. So if you have 240 AKV points and 50 BCV and you want to make an 11 month reservation at BCV, you can only use the 50 BCV. At 7 months you can use the AKV points also.

If you do a add on later, buy points at the resort that you love to stay at.

There are a lot of members who bought AKV points because DVD is offering a sale right now. Some have never stayed at the resort and some won't like it when they do.

The same thing happened with SSR. Now we see the SSR resale price falling as new owners sell there SSR points at a loss.

You have 11 month ressie window at home resort (which means any resort that you own points) and 7 at others. Points do not lose their home resort stripes by transfering. As noted, if you have AKV points you can use those 11 months out only at AKV; if you also have BCV points you can use those 11 months out only at BCV.

Some reality: BCV and VWL are small resorts; they can be difficult to get 7 months out many times of year. BWV is fairly large but it has two high demand booking categories which can be difficult to get at 7 months out many times of year: (a) lower point cost standard view (about 20% of the resort rooms); and (b) preferred point cost boardwalk view (another 20% of the rooms and considered the best view at BWV). In addition, it can be difficult to get almost any resort at 7 months out certain times of year -- such as holidays or all of December (a very high DVC demand time).

Thus, many, when they add-on, do so at a second resort to get the 11 month window at that resort. Though adding on, for example, 50 points at another resort doesn't get you much for any particular year, what many will do is just go to that resort every 3 years and use points banked from one year, their regular points, and points borrowed from the future year, and thus have 150 points for that once every 3 year reservation.
