We are going back to Disney in July...I don't want to carry a huge camera...but we had a Nikon Coolpix and I'm not happy with it and dont want to take it...Soooo is there something in between that and the large great cameras? LOL...Help!

The first question that is usually asked, is what do you anticipate photographing? Each scenario requires a different answer, ie, low light, night parades, fireworks, rides, etc. The experts, not me, then can make some recommendations. A place to start is what are you photographing now with your camera that you are unhappy with.

What are you not happy with specifically in your current camera? Are there any features you want specifically in your new camera?

Some of the newer high-end P&S such as Canon's G11/S90 and similar models from other manufacturers can produce very good results in most conditions. They fall short of SLR quality when the lighting is not good and require more care than a SLR to produce good results.

Another option is micro 4/3 but the price is even more than entry level SLRs.

I have a Caon DSLR- and I am not sure if I am going to want to bring it when (if...) we go.
DH has a Coolpix- neither of us like it. Not for stills and defintiely not for video.

I have a small P&S that I love to bring everywhere. It is a Casio exilim - my DD has the same one- it takes GREAT pics, and video.

Good question!

I would say I'm not happy with the quality of the pictures. They seem to be blurry regardless of the setting I choose. I would mainly be doing pictures of the kids with characters, on rides, fireworks, scenery.

If you are willing to spend a lot of money and take a round-about way to get there, I have an idea. First, by a large DSLR (Canon 1 series or Nikon D3 series) and use it with large lenses (70-200 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8) for a while. After you've gotten use to that, switch to an entry level DSLR with the kit lens. It will seem positively tiny and lightweight. Once you're done, donate the 1 series Canon to me.

A larger camera can be a tad inconvenient at times. However, there have been more times that I brought the little P&S and gotten rotten pictures and wished I brought the bigger camera than times I've brought the bigger camera and gotten great pictures and wished I brought the smaller one. (did that make sense?) In other words, the photo quality ALWAYS outweighs the inconvenience for me personally.

I have a Canon DSLR and don't take it to the parks everyday. I try to take it once or twice, but it weighs a lot and is hard to carry daily, even with a backpack.

Right now we are on vacation and heading to DC. It is supposed to rain the next two days and we are walking all day each day. I carried it all day yesterday in Williamsburg and I can feel it!

Today I am carrying our small Sony DHC-H5 (current model is DHC-H20) and it is better than my tiny P&S but not as good as my DSLR.....it will be fine.

I have also been surprisingly pleased with the camera I carry in my purse at all times. The canon sd1100IS.....there is a newer model of that out as well, but the picture quality is better than our previous P&S camera and it is TINY!
