What's a fair price for Spanish tutoring?

DS just started 1st grade. In kindergarten last year, his school offered Spanish class once a week and he absolutely loved it. I was also very happy to see the things he learned.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the school laid off the Spanish teacher and cut the program completely. DS was very sad when he learned this today.

So I am thinking about finding him a Spanish tutor. I am thinking about asking some of the hispanic families in our subdivision to see if any college kid or mom would be interested.

Question is how much should I offer?

I want 45 mins weekly class. The class should be mainly about speaking Spanish since DS is only in G1, but grammar should be gradually added to it. I also don't need a professional or someone with a lincense.

I am thinking about $35-$40. Is this fair? I don't want to pay low, but also don't want to pay too much either.

It depends on who is teaching it and where you live. You could probably get a college student to do it on the low end, but a certified teacher might want more.

My sister could easily get $75/hr as an ESL tutor because she lives in a high COL place, in an affluent area. Dh could get less than that because of where his students would be from. Both are certified, experienced teachers.

I really think it depends on where you live. I am a certified teacher, have several years of teaching experience and I charge $20/hr. Some people think thats a lot, some think it is really, really cheap. I did a lot of research before I started tutoring (I asked on here and asked some teachers I work with for their opinions) and this is the amount that I felt comfortable charging.

Thank you both for your input.

I live near metro Atlanta area. I would consider $75/hr to be a little high for me and $20/hr to be extremly cheap. I am only looking for college kid or a mom in the neighborhood. I don't necessarily require certification or teaching experience as at this stage, the tutoring will be more conversational.

I guess I'll start with $35-$40 for 45 mins class. :)

I got a weekly tutor for my HS age son when he was struggling. It was a grad student at the nearby college and he charged $15-20 (can't remember exact) an hour.

What about a high school student?
They might do it for $10 an hour or so. You might be able to get him 2 sessions a week.

Wow! I wish you lived near me! I have a degree in Spanish and making $20 to teach ONE first grader would be a great gig!

Our French tutor from Aliance Francais charges $30 an hour. My neighbor who is an elementary school teacher charges $50 an hour for tutoring. A college kid maybe happy with $20 or $25, you could call your local collage's Spanish department and see what they suggest

Thank you for the idea.

What's minimum wage in your area?
I am not too sure. $7-$9, maybe?

Again, thank you for the idea. DH actually works at a university nearby also they don't have a spanish program, they have a very good school of education.
