What would you tell your child to do?

I've been dealing with a similar issue lately and have posted on it to my professional blog.

The link in case anyone is interested on a teacher's perspective...

I'd be a bit wary of accepting the request in your son's situation. It is likely a 'phishing' expedition on the part of the university. More and more schools are checking prospective students out on FB to see what they are 'really' like.

Good luck!

She will be a senior this year. (Skipped a grade and has a later birthday, turning 16 next month).

This is my DD as well. She is 11 and taking her first HS class this year. Glad to hear there are others in the same situation.

OP: I would accept with strict privacy settings, if I would accept them at all. I have not heard FB being used much for this purpose, but I know kids who have met their roommates this way. He might want to "like" the university when it comes time to meet other students. But I would be really careful about giving the University full access to his friends etc. since they might post something inappropriate and reflect badly on him.

I would tell him to ignore the request. Facebook has a habit of constantly changing the way their privacy settings work. I just don't trust them.
