What would you guys think of another weekly contest?

I've been following this board for ages, and only recently really started to catch the shutter bug. That said, I love looking through all the "contest" and "game" threads where people have posted such gorgeous shots they've taken in the past.

Soo...I was thinking. How about a "game" ("contest"...whatever...the only prize is braggin' rights ) that, rather than getting you to show pictures you've already taken, instead gets you to go out and take new shots?

Here's what I had in mind: Every Monday, I can post the "theme" for the week. That theme might be "Macro", it might be "B&W", or it might be a color or some other "theme" like "Some like it hot" or "Simply Beautiful" or "Wow!".

But the whole idea is to get people to pick up their cameras and go out and use 'em, which is where all the fun is anyway!

So...what do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in doing this? (BTW...I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with the site "Fark.com", but they have a "Farktography" froup that does something similar, which is where I got this idea.)

I can think of a couple of similair tutorials/assignments that other members have started but never bothered to keep up.

I'm in! I've already posted most of my "good" Disney photos in the weekly contest, and we don't have another Disney trip planned any time soon (unless the band goes again in 2009), so my entries in the weekly Disney-themed contest are limited. This weekly "assignment" contest sounds like something everybody can participate in, and it'll force us to use our cameras.

(Hint: use "macro" as a theme soon.....my tulips are just about ready to bloom!)

Actually, I think I might do this as an "Assignment" thread, rather than a "Contest". That way, everyone can post more than one pic, if they like, and nobody has to feel like they're being judged on what they submit. Plus, this way we can all comment and ask questions about anything we like.

Just click on the "Results Thread" for any of the contests they've run in the past, and you'll see the kind of thing I have in mind. For example, the contest from 3-26 was "From a Distance", and these were the top three picks:

Obviously, three fairly different interpretations of the same theme, but still three awesome shots, right?

Anyway...think I may go ahead and post a new "Assignment" thread for next week so everyone can get a jump start on it over the weekend...including me.

Shhh...that's one of the reasons I wanted to do this, so we newbies could find out how these guys take such great pics. But whatever you do...don't tell 'em.

The only thing is, it's a lot of work (for you). Just ask rpthokie (and adromedaslove and Master Mason).

That's why I chickened out of the "Contest" idea and decided to go with the "Assignment" idea instead. Besides, that way, I get to participate too, and I'm tryin' ta' get motivated to start using this expensive toy.

I agree...doing a "contest" kinda thing is a lot of work. But something like this that's a little less formal shouldn't be too bad, and I think I can keep up with it enough not to let you guys down.

Sounds good and easy to run. If the organiser was too busy to run the assignment for a few weeks, then Im sure some of us wouldnt mind taking over temporarily - its only a matter of making one new post with the new assignment. Nothing like the work that goes into the photo contest (all GREATLY appreciated by the way!!).

Ok...It looks like we have plenty of people to participate, so I'll go ahead and get the new "Your Assignment, should you choose to accept: Week 1" thread up, so everyone can start thinking or shooting over the weekend.

Should we run this Monday to Monday...or would it be better to start it each week a little closer to the weekend? I'll start out planning on posting a new thread each Monday, and if you guys want to change it, we can do that.

Also...anyone want to volunteer to start the new thread should something come up and I not be able to do so? I'll try to keep a running list of upcoming topics on each week's thread to give people a head start in trying to come up with ideas.
