What was your worse cruise experience (hopefully NOT on DCL)...

This is a really odd, off the wall question. I would sincerely hope that nothing like this ever happens on the DCL, but I'm curious as to how they would handle something like this.

Last October, I cruised on Carnival for a 4 day cruise. IMHO, the cruise was TERRIBLE, and I will never, EVER cruise on Carnival again. Service, food, atmosphere was downright awful.

I went to the spa twice. On one occasion, I had a facial, and the woman told me that I had rosacia...which is a total and complete lie. I had no redness or flushing of any kind on my face, and she was very pushy to try and get me to purchase a $50 bottle of pills that was supposed to clear this up.

The second time was much, much worse. I decided to try one of those Detox programs where they hook the little cables to your stomach and legs, and it's supposed to help tone and firm your skin/muscles. They put a weird mud on your body, and wrap you in something similar to electric blankets.

I had heard that this program was actually very relaxing, with terrific results. After laying down on the table, the woman stuck the little tabs on me, covered me with the mud and the blanket, turned the machine on and left.

Within a minute, my legs were literally burning. They hurt so badly, I was almost crying. It made this electrical current run through my body that did tighten the muscles, but the pain was so bad, I was trying to figure out how to get the cables OFF of me. When the woman came in to check on me, I told her right away that my legs felt like they had burns on them, but the woman told me it was supposed to feel like that. She shortened the time and upped the dosage of electricity, and at that time, I finally told her to turn the machine off. I was shaking and crying because the pain in my legs was unreal.

After washing the mud off in the spa, there were literally burns marks on my upper thighs...about the size of a cigarette burn, some larger than others. They were bruising quickly, and there was a disgusting smell in the air of burning flesh.

I immediately complained to her, and she said that the marks would go away in an hour. What?! I tend to bruise a little easy, and this was something that was NOT going to go away in an hour. The burns started to blister and bubble, and I couldn't put my jeans back on, it hurt that bad. I wrapped a towel around me and went to the spa counter and complained. I showed them the markings (my stomach did not receive any, luckily) and they said they would speak to the spa manager right away. Lo and behold, the spa manager was the SAME WOMAN who did the treatment on me! She again insisted that the markings were normal, and they would go away in about an hour.

So, I hobbled back to my room, and my (then) husband freaked out. He was extremely angry and demanded that we go back and complain again. Well, the spa actually CLOSED EARLY for some reason. We went to the front desk to complain, and were given a number to call when we returned home.

Of course, many calls and letters later, we never heard anything from Carnival Cruise Line. I considered suing them, as it was nearly 3 months before the burns went away and I could comfortably wear pants again. I took pictures on an almost daily basis of my legs for proof. Unfortunately, I never got around to any legal happening because soon after the cruise, my husband and I started our divorce. To this day (literally 1 year to the day later), I have burn marks on my upper legs (a nice reminder of the end of my marriage, I might add :( ). I'm almost embarrassed to go swimming in a bathing suit because it looks like I took something and burned myself.

So, at any rate, do not cruise Carnival. They're a joke. :(

At least I know DCL is wonderful!

My worst cruise experience always happens on Thursday Morning when they kick me off the Disney Wonder.. Can you believe that? Expect ME to get off my own ship? I am writing DCL immediately. Making me get off a perfectly wonderful and magicall cruise just so they can let "other" people on---it's unthinkable!:teeth:

Steph, I cruised Carnival twice, back in my cheap college days when I didn't know any better, and while I didn't have the experience you did, I won't be going back either. After sailing DCL and other lines, it's really obvious that you get what you pay for on Carnival. It was a bargin, don't get me wrong, but lacked the great service, class, and entertainment that DCL offers.

That's too funny

This is HILARIOUS and made me laugh out loud at my desk!
That would have to be the worst experience on a cruise line I've had as well, how dare they make me LEAVE?

Seriously though, I am a travel agent and know enough to stay away from Carnival for the very reason that many people have had LOTS problems traveling with them. For that reason I've been lucky enough to not have a bad experience on a cruise line. :sunny:

I never knew how horrible Carnival was going to be. No one had really ever said if it was good or bad, and our travel agent at the time said it was a great cruise.

The food was horrible, the smoke was REALLY thick in the casino, the shows weren't that great....and we waited nearly 3 hours to get off of the ship the last day. They had us all getting off by colors, and everytime a different color was called, nearly everyone who had to stay groaned.

They played My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Like Mike EVERY DAY on the ship. Those were the only two movies that they did play. Luckily, the ship had an additional television channel...so I watched an awful lot of Judge Judy.

The only excursion I wanted to do was Blue Lagoon, and they were late getting us to the water taxi, so we nearly missed it.

The only thing that was nice about the cruise was the entertainment director.

The Goofy Pool during our Magic cruise last August. It was packed like sardines the entire week, especially on sea days. Didn't stop the kids from doing cannonballs off the side over and on top of people. Unfortunately, their parents and DCL didn't stop them either.

My wife ended up listening to a one hour sale pitch in the spa during the same cruise, when she was supposed to be getting some sort of detox treatment (sorry, don't remember what it was called). Instead of relaxing, she couldn't wait to get out of there. We always specify "no selling" when we book spa appointments, but forgot to with this one. And unfortunately, this one didn't limit the sales pitch to the end.

No bad experiences with our Celebrity cruises. On Wonder we had horrible concierges on one cruise, but it didn't rank high on the "bad experience" list.

We were on the Disney Mystery Cruise last March. We never got to the regular port-of calls on the scheduled day, but were able to fit in Cozumel and Key West on different days. Grand Cayman was missed altogether.

This was the same cruise that had 20 foot seas and 50 mph winds for about 8 continuous hours. Many people were sick, including most of our party. However, I will also say that none of this was Disney's fault. They made the best of the situation and had new navigators out to us as soon as possible. We actually laughed about most of it, because we never knew for sure where we would be heading the next day. I am a compulsive planner and have read these boards constantly for their invaluable information. All that was thrown out the window. We even ended up at a port no one ever heard of called Costa Maya. It was an adventure!!!

All that being said, I would never want to be on another cruise that experiences that kind of wind or waves. That 8 hours seemed like forever.

We are booked on Disney again in November for another 7 day cruise, so you see it did not keep us from coming back. This will be my 5th Disney 7 day cruise and that was the only problem we have had.

We took a carnival cruise for our honeymoon 8 years ago - Needless to say, it took us 7 years to go on another cruise (thankfully, it was DCL) I don't even know where to begin with the carnival cruise - The whole experience was just horrible - We were actually waiting for them to open the doors on the last day - We RAN off the ship!!!! Wish someone would have warned us! Thankfully though, we are still married -

ummm I refuse to go into the details (yeah- thank goodness you all say) but our worst cruise experience happened last Nov

My Most Horrible Cruise experience:

I'm on a Greek cruise. Very European Clientele.

One older person of the Opposite sex decided to sunbathe "clothing Optional" .

Person was of very large personage, and the sight was not Rubenesque, it was just scary!

:earseek:

Luckily, the ship had an additional television channel...so I watched an awful lot of Judge Judy.

Hey!! I'll trade you seeing Black Cauldron for Judy anytime. :p

jgalecpa, that's too funny. There once was an older gentleman sunning himself on the Magic while wearing a thong.

I guess my worst experience is not being able to partake of the evening buffets since I'm still too full from dinner. ;)

Karen, I know how you feel. I would have ran off of the ship as well, but we literally had to wait FOREVER to get off. While I was upset the vacation was done, I was bored to tears on the ship. There were NO activities to do, their library was a joke, we were turned away at Formal Night because we weren't "dressy enough", and it rained almost the whole trip.

While I realize the rain wasn't Carnival's fault, everything else was. I am an extremely easy person to please, but that cruise was just TERRIBLE. Bah!

Carnival also had a midnight buffet. They limited it to 100 cruisers per restaraunt (3 restaraunts on board), and you had to wait in line nearly an hour to get in to eat. First, you got to walk around and LOOK at the food. Then, table by table, you were allowed to get up and grab something to eat. There was enough food for maybe 50 people, and a lot of those first few people who went through the line were hogs. By the time we got up there (4th table), there was barely anything left! We asked for more fresh fruit, some desserts, etc. and were told that was all that was available for the buffet!

IMHO Carnival blows. And that's me being nice :) I LOVE DISNEY! Awesome food, great atmosphere, friendly people :)

:hyper:

well other then them kicking me off, I would say my worst experience didn't actually happen to me, but it was pretty bad...

It was a rough seas night, gale conditions.. I have good sea legs, so it wasn't really bothering me, but my friend was another story. I kept telling her, walk the deck and then go to bed, because you are going to get sick.. once it gets to a point, there is no going back. But she refused to miss our late seating dinner at Triton's... she wanted the creme brulee. She looked pretty green through most of the meal, I kept telling her.. you are going to get sick, go to the room, but she was stubborn. Not 5 minutes later she gets sick right in the middle of Tritons, between server stations! Needless to say, she went to bed after that! I felt so bad for our wonderful server team!

She was so bummed she missed the creme brulee, and our head server--the one and only--wonderful PJ remembered how she had wanted it, he got it for her each night after that, even though it wasn't on the menu again! and on the last night PJ, our servering team, and the neighboring serving team presented her with a special creme brulee when we were back in Tritions for the master chef menu, and applauded her for making it thru dinner!

Gotta hand it to Disney and their great crew...They sure did know how to turn a bad situation into a funny and memorable one.

I agree about carnival....it was the worst cruise I was ever on...I put it at the same level as a frat party! I will never forget portions of it...our neighbors, 2 young single guys, would come stumbling into their room about 3am-4am every morning and wake us up, one night one of them didn't make it to the bathroom and crapped in the bed (yes we heard every word they said in there LOL)..it got to the point I was so annoyed about being woke up at 4am every day that when I did wake up for the day at 7am I would ring their phones every morning just to wake THEM up! Our room stewart was terrible, the food just terrible and they sat us at the single table with 4 guys who didn't speak English. I would never take another Carnival cruise.

We cruised quite some time ago on Carnival because of a "special deal" (first clue) From the moment of walking on that ship and viewing the hideous neon decor, to the final run for the door it was miserable!
Our waiter couldn't figure out how to tie his shoes, much less serve a meal!
Our next door neighbors stayed in their cabin all the time and a peculiar smell emanated constantly from the room (ok, not the same smell as mentioned above LOL, but think what is offered constantly in freeport and nassau)
We left New Orleans on a stormy night and instead of cruising normal, the captain decided to haul a** for the next stop..think 20-30 foot waves and 21 knots! Walking the halls was literally done by bouncing off the walls. I don't get seasick...but this pushed the envelope! (ok, so the weather and seas weren't Carnival's fault...but they could have rerouted and SLOWED DOWN)
To end it all, my then five year old came down with strep throat and chicken pox! (again not Carnival's fault, but it did seem to keep with the theme of a horror cruise)
And just to add some humor here: Flying home (Carnival arranged air) they put us in three different areas of the plane...including seating my five yr old by himself (at this time I didn't know this was illegal...duh) so Delta was quite b**theaded about switching our seats and told us "ask someone yourself". Ok, I have a five year old running a 103 temp, broke out all over with chicken pox....we shouldn't have even been flying, but I did want us together to lower the exposure risk to others, anyway...I asked the gentleman sitting in the seat next to the one assigned to my son if he would switch, he didn't want to, so I handed him the barf bag and explained the situation and sweetly asked him to take good care of my son. Um...he switched!:teeth:
LOL

Some good friends of ours went on a cruise for their honeymoon (years ago and I don't know the cruise line).

The cabins had pretty thin walls. Apparently the cabin next to them had another honeymoon couple that, let's see how to put this... were frisky, frequent, and loud.

At one point during the cruise, our friends heard the wife of the other couple say "&#@$ me Johnny" to which our friends loudly replied "Please Don't!" They didn't hear another peep from the other couple the rest of the cruise.

Last Thanksgiving we cruised the Magic on the last cruise before they took it out of service because of the Norwalk virus episode. I got sick on the very last evening, so I was able to enjoy a wonderful cruise. The last evening and the next 48 hours were the pits, though. I got to explore several new exits on the way to the airport, as we had to pull over several times. 'Nuff said. We're back on the Wonder this Thanksgiving. It wasn't DCL's fault, it was just one of life's little speed bumps.
