What was your first Halloween costume you dressed up as when you were a child?

The last time I went out in costume was sometime in the range of 63 years ago. It was probably a winter jacket and just a plastic mask of something scary at that point in time. I can confidentially say that because growing up near the Quebec border it was always cold or raining and that was how we did it. Those were the days when you basically just went around in your general neighborhood. You had to go in the houses, not just the door, where the neighbors would try and guess who it was under the mask. Very seldom did that ask what we were supposed to be. They then would give us a baseball size popcorn ball (gross) or candy corn (pure sugar) or an apple (seriously?) and sometimes, if you were real lucky, a pencil).

I also recall the boxed costumes PP showed. The masks were horrendous.

When we were young my mom bought our costumes from Sears - they were pajamas that we wore the rest of the winter. Like this:

I'm pretty sure I had the clown at one point, and my sister had the bunny (probably different years).

ETA: I gotta say, that clown mask looks downright freaky to put on a young child! I don't recall the mask but I do remember the pajamas. I hated Halloween masks so likely my mom put make-up on my face instead.

5 years old. Gypsy fortune teller. My mother made the costume, complete with playing cards stitched to the skirt.
