What was there to do around where you lived when you were growing up?

We mostly used our imagination. It was fun. We lived near a woods so we played in caves, streams and built forts. We rode bikes. We played red light green light, tag, mother may I and Simon says. We used old sheets and blankets and a clothes line to make a tent and had our fluffanutter sandwich in there. We mowed lawns, raked leaves and shoveled for neighbors. We had block parties and sleep overs and talent show. We held lemonade stands and sold girlscout cookies. We helped out at church and we went to the youth club dances. We played with jacks and marbles and cap guns. We were pioneers, cowboys, pirates and when it was lousy weather Mom let us use her nighties and scarves and puff comforter to play I dream of Jeannie. We were always doing something until the street lights came on!

We walked to the store to buy 1 cent candy, rode bikes, made rubber band guns, built forts, played in the mud making mud pies. Us 4 girls in the neighborhood, use to climb trees, claim a branch and pretend we were married to one of the Beatles LOL. Read Archie and Jughead and drank KoolAid. Good times. Oh, my little record player. We would stand in front of the garage playing a 45 and singing and dancing pretending we were the group singing. Big hit was Stop in the Name of Love by the Supremes. We had the hand gestures down. Putting our arm straight out with our palm up (to stop) and then over our hearts.

get in trouble. sadly far too many of my former peers and neighbors fell into alcohol, drug and violent/illegal activities. a rural issue.

We had a penny candy store across from my elementary school. It had a huge glass counter with trays inside and jars on top. I found a quarter on the way to school and my friend and I were in there for ages trying to pick our pieces! Now that would cost $20!
