What type of grass seed to get & best time to plant?

I have a area in my yard that needs to be reseeded.
I hate looking at all the types of grass seed & trying to make a decision.
Last time I was unsuccessful at planting and nothing grew.
I live in Northern Ky.
Any advice would be great..

If the area isn't too large, we've filled in with the bags that already have all things necessary, seed, mulch and fertilizer. The stuff goes on "green" and it's easy to keep watered and we've been happy with the results in the fall, especially.

I really would go to a local hardware store that sells seeds for the area if you need to seed a large area.

I recently read that your yard can benefit from putting grass seed out in the Fall so they sit there all winter and sprout in the Spring when the snow melts and everything is moist. We are going to try that with our yard, this Fall, and see if anything really comes of it.....the goal being to grow thicker grass.
