Are there any TS or maybe even CS places that you thought were not going to be that great but turned out to be pleasantly surprising?

Last yr DS insisted on Nine Dragons, I wasnt looking fwd to it I thought we have chinese at home. Turns out I had the best General Tso chicken I have ever had! Here at home they always make it real sweet with a hint of spice but at ND it was the other way around but not too spicy and it was DELICIOUS!

Also Mama Melrose suprised me, I wanted to take DH to Sci Fi but he wanted MM and it turned out very good! DH and DS loved their steaks and I enjoyed my pasta!

I too was going to say Nine Dragons. In our 14 trips we have NEVER eaten there as I figured I could get okay Chinese food at home so why bother in WDW. We had to change reservations one night and it was the only restaurant in Epcot we could get into during CP.

I am so glad we went.

The soups were okay but the Sweet and Sour Pork and the Canton Beef were delicious.

We are actually thinking of making ADRs for our next trip. :)

I was expecting Mama Melrose's to be fair at best

...but it ended up being one of my all time favorite meals at WDW!

I was expecting Teppan Edo to be just okay and had made the reservation mainly to entertain the kids during dinner

...but it was fantastic! I want a piece of that Chocolate Ginger cake right now. :lovestruc

I wasn't expecting Le Cellier to live up to the hype

...but it did! The cheese soup was just okay, but the steak and pretzel bread were wonderful.

P.S. after reading these reviews, I want to try Nine Dragons now!

I think the key to being happy with Disney Dining is to go into it expecting everything (food, service, theming, etc.) to be merely "pretty good." Because pretty good food with pretty good service is still a pretty good meal, right? And "pretty good" is a standard that Disney can nearly always beat. (Whereas if you expect everything to be amazing all the time, you'll be disappointed.) In fact, I've never had a dining experience at Disney that I wouldn't be willing to repeat; they've all at least met and almost all exceeded the "pretty good" standard.

That said, we have relatively high standards for what we consider to be great, and we were blown away by the quality of the food at Mama Melrose and at Akershus dinner, relative to what we had expected.

before even reading the other posts, when i saw the title of the thread, the first place I thought of was Nine Dragons. We just went in May and it was delicious!!!

The kids loved it too!

After seeing the large number of negative reviews for both places, I'd have to say Tony's Town Square and Mama Melrose.

we ate a Tony's last night and I was VERY scared because there have been some bad reviews lately...but WOW it was so good! my mom and I both had the new york strip steak it was so delicious and service was great! I will definately go back ! We are doing Boma tonight and I am a little scared for this one too, hope im suprised like last night :)

I just have to chime in about Nine Dragons...we have been there about 3 - 4 times and have never had a bad meal. It is really good and the CMs are always very friendly.

I also want to say that I was not expecting much from Rose and Crown but we had a great dinner there. It is not even that I heard a lot of bad things about the place...I guess I just didnt know what to expect. I had the mixed greens which were very good, my guys had the soup = yum, and for the entree I had the grilled pork loin which I thought was excellent! It was different from anything I have ever had. I cannot remember what the boys ate. The sticky toffee pudding was also very good...oh, cant forget the Welsh Dragon cocktail!

I'm going to have to say Nine Dragons as well. I was there this past Friday with a friend. On a whim we decided to try and get in there for a late dinner. She had been there before but I hadn't. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be anything special. I loved it though! I'll definitely be going back on a future trip.

Oh--and Restaurant Marrakesh. I hate couscous and it gets a ton of bad reviews, but my DH insisted. Loved it! It was wonderful!

I've always looked at Kona Cafe as the 'red headed step child' of Ohana, but we tried it last year and now we love it! It was one of the best dinners we've ever had on property. Needless to say....it's on our list of ADR's for June and August! :thumbsup2

I LOVE Columbia Harbour House.

That upstairs has saved my family from many, many meltdowns. A quiet place to eat quietly :) Go figure.

Hmmmm, which reminds me, is the chowder on the dining plan???

GF Cafe we have had a few last minute breakfasts there & always found it good with good service. But we went to dinner on one trip it was so awesome the fish of the day I had there was way better that the fish I had at Coral Reef & the service was fab. Plus it was relaxing.

Another vote for Grand Floridian Cafe

We ended up there at the last minute...the day we ate there we were supposed to eat at Whispering Canyon Cafe, but they were having problems and weren't seating anyone for lunch :confused3

So to compensate, they let us use out ADR's at GF Cafe. We were disappointed, but it turned out to be REALLY good! I can't wait to go back in December! :thumbsup2

I actually have a few

Ohana when we went in 08 was being DOGGED not a good review. We loved it and it has become a favorite!

Tonys was a HUGE surprise in March. I went in not expecting much at all and everything was really good.

Rose and Crown was the only thing we could get for lunch when making a last minute lunch ADR and DH and I both LOVED it. Burger was the best I'd had in a while.

Tusker House - I didn't really want to go there but we ended up checking it out. Then I tried their seafood stew. Now it is one of our favorite places.

The Wave at the Contemporary was absolutely fantastic. We were stunned that with food that excellent it was only a 1 dining credit meal.

YES!!! After reading about a zillion awful reviews of San Angel Inn I was not thrilled when my cousin said he wanted to go there last October. It was FANTASTIC!!!! Easily my favorite Epcot meal that I've ever had - and that includes Le Cellier, which was good but not as good as one would expect after all of the glowing reviews. Another great surprise was Tony's. My traveling companions left much earlier than me on our departure day leaving me with the morning and afternoon to myself. While wandering around MK I decided to see if I could get into Tony's for lunch so I could see if it's as bad as I've read. It was really good! The food was tasty and the service was excellent!! Don't be afraid to try places based on reviews.:goodvibes
