What to wear to Broadway show?

DH and I are going to NY this weekend to celebrate our anniversary. Friday night we are seeing Mary Poppins on Broadway. Just how dressed up does one need to be for an evening show? It might sound like a stupid question for those that go to shows all the time, but I've only been to NY twice, once saw Peter Pan on Broadway when I was a child and we were pretty dressed up, but that was a long time ago, and once a few years ago we took the kids and saw the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show. It was an afternoon performance and many people were wearing jeans, nobody was very dressy at all, we were wearing church type clothes, felt a little overdressed. Is that typical these days, or was it just because it was an afternoon show?

I was thinking dress pants and a nice top for me, but is that good enough? We don't want to look totally out of place. What about DH, is this a jacket and tie type of event? Business casual? or dressier?

Help! Thanks Dis'ers!

What you plan to wear sounds very nice... you will find that there will be audience members in every type of dress ... from dressy to jeans and sweaters!

What you mentioned is probably what I would wear. I went and saw Wicked at the Orpheum in San Francisco last month and I went with the dress pants and a nice top. And when we actually got there there were people dressed up, casual, you name it.

I agree. There will be some more dressed up than others...what you have planned sounds good to me.

Well, NY may be having snow Friday night, so you may want to consider that.

And honestly, it depends on you--I always dress for comfort. Not sweats & a tee shirt, but if the weather is so-so, I've been known to wear nice jeans & a sweater to a show. It doesn't seem to matter if the show is at night or during the day, people really don't get dressed up to go to a Broadway show anymore. Those that do may be going to a restaurant that is fancier & they are really dressing for that.

Thanks so much for all the replies! I thought we would be okay, but I wanted to get some reassurance from people more experienced with these types of things!

Your outfit sounds perfectly fitting, and your husband doesn't need a jacket or tie. Just a polo or button down would be fine.
A girlfriend and I saw The Little Mermaid the night after it opened and we saw a girl wearing a torn hoodie and messy gray sweatpants that were dirty and ripped at the bottom :scared1::scared1: That was horrifying to me-- I go to shows all the time and the absolute most casual I've ever gone was in very dark, very nice jeans (with heels and a nice sweater).

When we hit the theaters in NYC, we usually wear nice pants and tops. I have even worn jeans, but they are nice jeans, with a sweater...especially if it's cold or snowy.
Yes, some people still get all gussied up..but that does seem to be changing. More and more people are casually dressed for the theater.

My wife and daughter wear dresses and are quite dressed up when they go.

I also saw WICKED at the Orpheum...what a fabulous show! :thumbsup2

What you have planned sounds fine. I usually where black pants and a nice shirt when I go to show.
As for your husband, I feel he dosent need to wear a jacket or a tie. It's going to be cold in NYC and I also feel that the theaters are a bit cold. So maybe a nice sweater.

Have fun! Mary Poppins is a great and really fun show.

My DS14 and I went to NYC to see Mary Poppins last March for his 8th grade music/drama trip. It was a weekday matinee, but I made him wear khakis and a polo shirt, because it's the theater. We got to school to get on the buses and almost every kid who was going had on jeans. Oooooh, he was SO angry with me! :rotfl2: He did look nice, though!:thumbsup2

We saw Mary Poppins in London in the West End. I wore black pants, a dressy top and heels. Enjoy the show. It's AWESOME!

What you are planning to wear sounds perfectly fine. I go to shows all the time and that's usually what I wear. When I took my mother to see Mary Poppins we were in the 3rd row of the Mezzanine and we had a air vent blowing directly on us! My mother had to wrap a scarf around her head and a wool hat, I don't want to give anything away, but Mary Poppins saw my mom and had to double take. :lmao:

I'll be in the city on Saturday, going to see the Titanic exhibit in Times Square! If you see a crazy lady OVERLY bundled and her embarrassed daughter trailing behind, that'll be me!
