What to wear on airplane & do zippers beep?

I know that it can feel cool or stuffy on the airplane so I was trying to find running suits for the kids so they could take off or leave on the jacket. And also have them wear shorts underneath and when we arrive in Orlando the kids could just slip their pants off. I can't find any for DS7 that do not have any zippers on the legs...do zippers beep when going though security? I'm trying to coordinate "non-beeping" clothes. And to try and find a pair of jeans w/o the metal button is impossible.

DD4 has a matching zip up sweatshirt/pants outfit she'll wear. The sweatshirt will come off anyway during security so I'm not worried about that beeping. DD2 - haven't found anything like DD4 has but I could just put her in jeans (w/no button) w/a sweatshirt and she'd be fine. You wouldn't think it would be hard to find any of these things but I live in central Maine and even though we have a lot of stores around...the selection stinks!

Thanks for any ideas.

We have never had anything on us beep going thru security. We almost always have zippers and metal buttons on us.

For the kids I put them in zip off pants. It is usually cold when we leave, but warm in Florida. They can zip them off into shorts once we arrive.

I think you may be making a bigger deal out of the cloths than you need to. My underwire "top" has never beeped etc.

You can find zip off pants at discount places like Meyer/Walmart/Old Navy etc. HAVE FUN ON YOUR TRIP!!!

I wear jeans with metal zippers & buttons through security & never have a problem. (We travel a lot in and out of the various DC airports, some of the highest security around.) We take our shoes/hats/coats/pins&lanyards off, put our "3-1-1" Ziploc bags in the bins. I do leave my wedding bands on...no problem there either. Right after September 11th, the systems were apparently set too sensitive & would go off on tiny metal beads in hair-wraps. The systems are not set as sensitive anymore, plus even if the walk-through beeps, a TSA agent will just wand you, your zipper might beep :rolleyes1 & you'll be on your way.

agnes!
PS - Oh and dittoes to PP about the underwire top (thought I have read that the underwires might actually be plastic).

I've beeped before and been wanded..no problem for me. Just didn't want the kids to get freaked out. But we play airport and pretend like we're going through security. We make sure to take off shoes/coats and empty pockets which will be empty when we go through for real but once in a while we leave a penny in their pocket. So when they go through the doorway I make a beeping sound and I get our big flashlight and "wand" them and find the penny. So hopefully that will help them in case they do get "wanded".

My sister went through recently and her capris pants had a little "buckle" on the bottom of the pant legs and she beeped.

DS7 does have zip offs but wasn't considering those due to all the zippers...but if they don't beep then maybe he'll wear those. Thanks again!!!

Our family wore jeans with zippers and metal fasteners, T's (and sweats over top) in January and didn't have any problem beepings going thru the metal detectors.

I would really recommend velcro, slip-ons, or any type of shoe that is easily taken off & put back on--even for adults. My kids (6&8) insist on tie-ing their own shoes and practically got trampled trying to do so. And carry as little as possible... you have unload bags, packs, wallets, camera/video, etc at security and we found it difficult with all the traffic to keep track of the kids AND our belongings.

By unload do you mean unpack your bags/backpacks at security? I thought they just went on the belt and through the "x-ray" machine.

Just bought new shoes - all velcro. My TA also told me there is something in the light up shoes that will set off the metal detector. Since they have to take them off anyway it probably won't matter.

Never had a problem with zippers and or underwires :)

I am putting DD in capris and a t-shirt, but she will have a zip up sweatshirt that will do double duty in the parks when it's chilly!

DS will be in cargo pants from The Childrens Place, they fold into shorts!! We got them for only 9$!! and a T-shirt , with a zip up sweateshirt :)

Sandals for both and Crocs Athens Sandals for DH & I :)

Only once have I seen a pair of jeans set of a metal detector (college sponsered trip to the Smithsonian 6-7 years ago). Even then it wasn't that big of a deal- a quick pat down by the female security guard showed that the girl wasn't hiding anything. To put it in perspective, that was one pair of jeans out of 200.

Yes, we had to unload our bags & backpacks (plus coat pockets, pants pockets, watches and jewlery/earrings) completely and put contents in a bin at the Philly airport. Then they ran the bin thru the machine. They moved at zip fast speed and you can't take your bin away from the table to get re-dressed and everything re-packed (we had to do it there while people were grabbing and running, the kids nearly got trampled trying to put shoes on).

In Orlando we just had to empty anything carried on our body (wallets, watches) and electronics and baggie of hygiene items separate. In Orlando everything else in the pack stayed in the pack (unless you were one of the lucky ones that beeped on the way thru).

So I think the degree of which you need to unload depends on the airport. HTH

Wow I did not know that! Well I expected coat/pant pockets, change, jewelry etc. but to empty backpacks. Thank you for that info. I'll be sure to put everything in ziplocs so I can keep things somewhat together.

We fly out of Philly monthly and never had to empty the backpacks:confused3
Most recently was just last Friday 4/6/07.

Just make sure you have everything into the backpack before you hit the security area except your 3-1-1 bag. I take my wallet, keys etc and put thim in a zippered park of my backpack. Take off your jacket and shoes, those and the 3-1-1 bag go into a bin but the backpags go through on the belt as is. Carry your ID and boarding pass, each member of the party should also carry their own boarding pass and ID if necessary.

At MCO the procedure was the same except they now have very small round bins for the 3-1-1 ziplock.

My kids dress normally - comfortable clothing in layers. Last week it was capris, t-shirt and a zip front sweatshirt and sneakers.

I've never heard of emptying bags in any of the airports I've flown out of, including Philly. Exception might be if there are smaller bags inside (makeup kits, camera bag etc.) that security might want to take a closer look at. Or if you have your laptop inside, etc. If a bag is small enough they'll ask you to put it in a bin with things from your pockets etc.

most airports just ask you to take your coat and shoes. You need to declare any liquids you are carrying. some airlines let you bring in a quart sized ziplock with up to 3 oz container of liquids. also before you get to security you should place keys and change into your carryon. you can check on the airline website for whats allowed and not allowed.

Just to clarify there is a ban on all liquids - this is a TSA rule not an airline rule and applies to all airlines. You can only carry on liquids or gels if they are 3.4 oz or less and carried in a clear quart size zip lock bags. The only liquids that need to be declared are medicines that are over 3.4 oz and or baby formula or breastmilk.

I highly suggest anyone flying visit the TSA website here:

This link will take you to the section on traveling with children including a review of the security screening process:

Here is the info on liquids and gels:

Thanks for all the info and links. I went back through my carry on list and decluttered it. Not much just necessities will be in there. We've decided to send a pkg ahead of time so that helps alot.

Thanks again fellow disers!!!!!:goodvibes
