Hi all,
We will be taking our first no parks trip to central Florida. We are toying with the idea of moving there and want to get a feel for the area in a more normal (:confused3 is there such a thing) way. We have not been in the summer so we are anxious to see what the weather is like. So....

What would you suggest we do in order to get a feel for the "real life" in the Orlando area?

Thanks!
Anne

We too are looking to make this move too. We have been to disney in June an August. What we plan to do is do everything possible we can very late evening even midnight or later after it cools off. Does not work for dr appointments, picking up presciptions, face to face banking (who does that on a regular bases)

Meaning if we don't want to go out in the heat of the day we don't have to for the most part.

Walk neighborhoods you interested in living in stop an talk to the ppl who live there. Ask them lots of questions about the neighborhood. How long most residents have lived there an ages. How BARKING dogs are handled along with dogs running loose both very huge issues in some areas. Walk neighborhood at different times of the day am, afternoon an evening. If possible several different days too.

Go grocery shopping price everything you normally buy add it up, take along copies of your utility bills call the local utility companies as how much bill would be for your average usage now. Remember summer electric might be higher than you paying now but winter should be cheaper. If you tend to water lawn an flowers now your water bill will prolly go up as you will prolly water more often in florida.

When house hunting the 1st thing DH looked at along with price of home was the property taxes didn't matter if the house was reasonible price if taxes was high. Tax rate can vary greatly in the same county too.

That is WAY too general a question, no offense intended. The answers are really dependent on what you are comfortable living near, your age and habits, and how much Mouse intrusion you can tolerate on your daily life. We lived in Clermont for 5 years. It's a nice growing town at the intersections of 27 and 50 in Lake County. Lots of Mouse CM's live in that direction.

You could also visit the follwing ideas:

  • Downtown Celebration
  • Mt. Dora
  • Winter Park
  • Leu Gardens
  • Florida Mall
  • Mall at Millenia
  • Lake Eola in downtown Orlando

That's a short list. OrlandoInfo has a much more in depth list.
