I have a potential problem with my vacation. I might accept a new job offer next week and if I do it means I will have not be able to take the family on vacation. I will be soo disappointed if I cannot go. In fact, I will be lucky if I can even take a week off for my vacation. Most of my developer pts. were used. Anyway, if I can't go what are my options? Can I just cancel and get the pts. back to rent to someone else? Can I just rent the reservation to someone else if it is in my name? Can I transfer them? What would be the best way to handle this? I have never rented/transfered my pts. or rented/transferred any from anyone else. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks

I work in IT (computers) and this has happened several times...

First of all, accept the job, so 1. they know you are serious, 2. you can sign up for benefits, and 3. They can get your workspace ready, and 4. SO that they don't keep looking for a better fit for the job until you start. It's only yours after you show up.

That being said, tell them that you have already scheduled a vacation with a timeshare, and ask for unpaid leave. They will understand.

So go get job, go on unpaid vacation, and enjoy vacation knowing that a paycheck is shortly coming...

Congrats on the new job,

Provided you cancel the reservation 31 days or more prior to check in, the points will be returned to your account without restrictions, assuming the reservation you are cancelling was at a DVC resort. If your reservation was for something other than a DVC resort (a cruise, a WDW hotel, etc) then the returned points will be reservation points and can only be used to book something else outside of DVC. If you cancel 30 days to 1 day prior to check in, the points go into "holding" and can only be used to book 60 days in advance. If you cancel on your check-in day, the points are forfeited. These are the cancellation rules for regular points so I assume they also apply to developer points.

Developer points cannot be transferred to another member. You can make a reservation with developer points and rent that reservation to someone. Developer points expire one year after you got them so any reservation you make would have to be within that 1-year time frame. You could also post your existing reservation for rent on the DVC Rent/Trade board once you are within 30 days of check-in.

Exactly what I was going to say! :)
I wouldn't even ask for it to be unpaid leave. You may be surprised and find they are willing to give you paid vacation, even if you haven't earned it yet, just because they want you.

Thanks for all the great advice. The actual offer isn't coming till next week. I only know that I got the job because several of the people I interviewed with told me so afterward and to expect an offer next week. I will try and get the time off but they are very busy and thus the reason for bringing me on board. I prefer to take the vacation of course but I don't want to be in a position to lose a bunch of points. Can someone elaborate on the reason I would have to wait to within 30 days of my reservation to rent it to someone else? Can I rent to two different people since it is a split stay? Waiting till November to rent to someone else makes me nervous. Are there really people waiting till November to make holiday travel plans? Thanks again everyone. I love this board.

The 30 days I mentioned applies to posting a "reservation for rent" on the DVC Rent/Trade board here on the DISboards. You could split it into two separate rentals, one for each part of the split stay, since they are two separate reservations. If you wanted to post a "Points for Rent" instead of a reservation, that can be posted at any time.

Thank you so much. I still will try and take the vacation but its a relief to know what my options are in case I can't. My wife presented another option- she goes with the kids and I fly down for each holiday. I hope she was kidding...
