I'm assuming my 16 inch laptop won't fit in the room safe....so what do others do with their laptops while on vacation?

I always lock my laptop up in my suitcase and it has never been a problem. In fact it is what we do with all of our electronics while on a trip.

When I take mine, I tuck it in the bottom of a dresser drawer under our clothing. I have also tucked it in the luggage between our beach towels. I have never had a problem.

I have a security cable and fasten it to something permanent or difficult to move. It's passworded also.

When I'm on vacation, I leave my laptop at home.;) However, I put my iPad in the suitcase!:thumbsup2

We do this as well. Just left it out on the table and never had an issue. We bring the laptop so I can copy all our daily photos to the hard drive and USB sticks. Plus have a few movies/tv shows on it in case someone gets sick.

I leave it on the table, unsecured. Might be tempting fate but I've done it many times without an issue.

We are also brave, and leave it right on the desk. Never had a problem in many trips. There is so much expensive equipment in our room (iPods, iPad, sometimes 2 laptops, lots of camera equipment) and we have never had anything go missing.

I have a cable lock and lock it to something. I have even locked it to my handle on my suitcase. Even though the suitcase can be moved from the room too, I figure it would be pretty obvious seeing a laptop attached to it.

There is no perfect security method... just make it harder for them to steal it.

I also put it in the suitcase, and use a luggage lock to secure the suitcase. You can use a regular luggage lock and just remove it if you're flying, or you can use a TSA approved luggage lock which you can leave on to keep your bag secured while flying.

I've left it on the desk before, sometimes with a security cable. Could stash it in your luggage if you are worried. I have never placed it in the safe, seems like much more hassle that it is worth there.

I use a security cable to lock it around something that is fairly permanent, like the clothing rod in the closet area. Then I put the laptop into its' bag and lock it closed. It's probably overkill, but my laptop is my life, lol.

I leave mine out, on the table, plugged in and most of the time on but asleep. I put a newspaper or magazine or maybe a T shirt on top of it and that's it.

I am a careful person but with this, it just doesn't bother me all that much. Heck, people have more crap on their cell phones than on a laptop.

Umpteen trips over the last 7 years and have allways left it on the table, never had any issues.

I've always left mine out in the room or in the suitcase. Forgot one day and even left it on the bed before we left - returned that night to a clean room and the laptop still sitting in the same location on top of the made-up bed.

I've always thought the safes in hotel rooms were next to useless anyway (as if employees don't know how to get around those things or have access to override codes or keys?).

Mine was always left on the desk and I never had a problem. Now I have an iPad and it fits in the safe.

If there was a plague of stolen electronics you'd hear all about it right here.
Sometimes we tuck ours away, other times, we leave them in plain sight. No problems.:earsboy:

First, it depends on the resort. Some of them have safes that will fit many laptops (you may have to be creative about getting it in) and others have very shallow wall safes that are pretty much useless.

As noted, a determined and professional thief likely will be able to get your computer or other electronics if they decide they want to regardless of the security procedures you take. Your goal should be to present enough of an obstacle to the casual thief that they will just move along to the next room. That would include NOT having your devices in plain sight and doing something (anything) that would require them to take a few minutes to get the laptop out, such as having it secured with a cable lock or in a locked suitcase.

If you want to guarantee the safety of your computer--or at least make the hotel liable for its loss--your only option is to store it in the safe deposit boxes at the front desk.
