What to do with a duplicate gift???

Okay, so great grandma Nelly gave you a gift. Nice gift but you already have 3 or you don't need it, whatever. You want to bring it back but you don't have the receipt, may not even be sure where said item was originally purchased, what do you do? Do you:

1.) bring it to the nearest store - any store that carries said product and try to get store credit, exchange for something else...

2.) Ask Grandma for the receipt hoping she will have it, not get offended, etc. ....

3.) Put it in a box hoping to regift to someone else down the line.....

4.) Other, explain?

If it's something faily generic I'd probably tuck it away and regift at some point if I'm in a pinch for a last minute gift.

I'd try to return it without the receipt first and if that doesn't work out, I'd give it to the local food pantry (ours does clothes,etc., as well as food).

I'm sensing deja vu with this question. I could have sworn there's another post by the OP about this same situation...

I would either save it to regift, or, even better--donate it to a needy child who would love to have the gift.

Wow, am I the only one so far who would ask Grandma for the receipt?

Folks in our family are pretty easy going about this kinda stuff. Maybe that is why I would have no problem saying: "Grandma, I am sure you didn't know but we already have two of these. Are you ok with me exchanging this for something that will work well/coordinate/whatever with the ones we already have? You are; oh good, may I have the receipt please."

For me, it would depend on the price of the gift. If it were worth $100 or more, I would ask for the receipt. If it were less than $100, it would end up with the rest of the things that we take to donate to the Women's Shelter downtown.

My friend has brought me a Cd i was already given for my birthday, its of a band who have recently reformed. I've asked her for the recent as i could swap it for another cd/dvd, she doesnt seem very forth coming with the receipt though

Is this for the portable DVD player you posted your dad gave, or the Strawberry Shortcacke doll that you received making a duplicate of the gift you bought? Or really, a 3rd gift?

I can't ever think of a time that I had to return 3 Xmas gifts. Yikes. Maybe there is a way around this in the future, especially on childrens gifts. Maybe gifters could check with you to see if you already have several? Sorry, I really don't know what else to suggest. I know it became a problem with niece & nephews as the got older since they had so much. I simply started checking with their parents before buying something.

But, if you really can't return it somehow, here's what I tend to do with unwanted gifts depending on what they are. Donate, re-gift when appropriate, yardsale, trash (usually applies to DSIL dollar store items).

I donate it to my daughters school since they have a chinese auction coming up every year after Christmas and they use it for one of the prizes there.

My children's elemmentary school's 6th grade class would always have a reading auction at the end of the year. They got dollars for reading X number of pages during the year, then could spend them at the auction. A lot of my duplicates got used up that way.

I save the really nice, but duplicate things, in a special cabinet. DD still checks it out when she's home and needs something. I have been known to make up a package of things to send to nieces for birthdays. My SIL does the same thing for my children and I.

This thread was started as I was curious to what people do when this happens, not due to other threads I started.

Unfortunately even after letting family & friends know my kids are registered, they like _____, gift cards, saving bond, $$$ into savings account, NO gift at all please, they insist on buying more toys & rarely ask what they have. Yes, they already have waaaayyyy toooo much!!! I guess they like to watch the kids open a "real" present vs. a piece of paper or nothing.
