We wanted to something non-Disney/non-theme park with our children 4 & 1. We were thinking mybe putt-putt. We have one day that we will not be going to the parks or even checked it to our hotel yet. We had planed to do a little shopping also but that will not take up the whole day. Any suggestions????:earsgirl:

Thanks a bunch!!!!

I know you said not Disney/Theme park, but two things popped into my head.

Maybe go to the Fort Wilderness Resort? I know they have a petting zoo and horse drawn carriage rides? Supposed to be a very relaxed area.

Also just walking around the Boardwalk area at Disney is fun - particularly in the evening.

Maybe a movie if it is hot and everyone needs break midafternoon.

Not sure where it is, but I know that there is a huge McDonald's in the area with an awesome play area for kids. May be good place for them to burn off steam for a little while without spending any money!!

Have a wonderful trip!!

I have played putt-putt with a one year old before and it kind of takes away from the fun! If they are boys they might like Race Rock Cafe or Nascar Cafe for lunch. The FAO Schwarts store at Pointe Orlando is neat. You could just wander around City Walk at Universal and play in the Fountains. We like to do the free type things around Disney at least one day like Downtown Disney, Boardwalk, ride around on monorail and boats. Fort Wilderness is a great idea. Maybe the playground at AllStar Movies if you are not staying there.

cpayne: We have two children, one four and one 8 months, so we're in the same boat. If you want a true "non-Disney non-theme park" experience, I might suggest going to Green Meadows Farm which is a short drive southwest of the Kissimmee I-4 interchange. It's a real working farm; your older child will get to milk a cow and chase some chickens around, and they have a neat little hayride. It's clean and well-organized with some friendly tourguides. It's definitely off the beaten Disney path. Our oldest was three last year when we went, and she had a blast. (I'm so proud of her. Most of the other children were frightened by the chickens; mine, of course, had no problem cornering one and picking it up -- yes, they do have washroom facilities for cleanup).

Otherwise, unless you head into the city of Orlando, it's kind of difficult to find anything that isn't Disney/Universal related and doesn't have the theme-park feel. If you want to have an old-school tourist shopping experience, you can't beat just getting on International Drive and driving north through all of the crazy congestion north of the Convention Center. Lots of interesting things to see there.

Frankly, I don't think you could beat shopping at Downtown Disney, on the east side. They have a big Lego playcenter there adjacent to McDonalds, a mini-train ride, and in the past they had fountains that squirt water out of the ground for the kids to run around in. That's all surrounded by shopping and restaurants. You could wander around there for at least half a day without getting bored.

Thank you guys so much for all of the wonderful suggestions!! I knew that I could count on all of you to help me!!:earsgirl:
