What to do when you don't want to trade?

I've recently started collecting pins and have only purchased the ones I fall in love with. Mainly Tinkerbell, my absolute favorite little pixie:) It's not like I have tons of pins, only about 10, but I love the ones I have. I enjoy wearing them but am not really interested in trading them at this time. I've had more than one child try to trade for them and have even gotten scolded by the parent telling me I must trade with their child and should not wear them if I don't want to trade. (he wanted my BCV pin)

What do you do if you want to wear your pins but really don't want to trade them? (yet)

There are alot of pins that I enjoy wearing but want to keep. I simply hold up my lanyard and say "these are my traders and these are my keepers". If they see nothing that they want on my keepers then I say thank you for looking but I will have to decline a trade right now.
Alot of people are confused as to who HAS to trade. They seem to think that everyone who wears a lanyard has to trade, but it is only the CM's who cannot turn down trade offers. I have that same thing happen to me all the time, someone sees a pin I am wearing and will say, "Oh, I want that one". I just explain to them that I am not a CM and trading is my hobby. It does seem to get through to some, but there are others who still get mouthy if you refuse a trade. When this happens, walk away. Peggie

I generally don't wear my keepers, mainly because I don't want to lose them! ;)
I wear a pin (or more ;) )every day.
In the parks I wear two lanyards of traders. Although those I have traded for I keep on the lanyard too. A few times someone has asked to trade for one of my keepers and I tell them the truth -- I just traded to get it myself. :) So far no one has been offended.
They are your pins and you can do with them as you wish.
The rare times I wear keepers, I put them on my clothing, and keep them off the lanyard.

I do what Luv2Roam does, too. I wear my keepers (always an Eeyore lol) on my clothes; off the lanyard.

But the bottom line is, they are your pins. Wear them where you want to and enjoy them. Ignore those people that can't understand that. :)

Thanks for the replies and suggestions:D I will certainly have to get a few traders so the little ones do not get disappointed.

The little boy that wanted my BCV pin literally had my lanyard in his hand. Personally, I think the parents wanted the pin, not the little guy.

Another question. Do you use special pin backs or just use the ones the pins come with? I'm always afraid the pins are going to come off.

Almost sounds to me like sharks with a sharkling in training. I could almost somewhat understand someone brand new to pin trading not being aware of the rules and thinking the "have to trade" applies to guests as well as CMs. (hey, I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt!)

But is a new trading family going to know about the BCV pins (all three of which on Pinpics have a high members wanting to members trading ratio)? Not likely. They knew what they wanted and probably tried to guilt or con you into trading, thinking you might not know the rules that well.

Next time they say you have to trade, just say "well, report me to my manager." :p

As for the kid touching the lanyard --- that is a big pin etiquette no-no. Someone get the kid to a Scoop seminar fast!

Obi-Wan Pinobi, ( luv that screen name!)

Sharkling in training:p Great, now everytime I'm approched by a kid, I'm going to be picturing a juvenile jaws. :)

What kinds of pins should I use to trade? Do you trade for fun or are you really looking for specific pins?

I have 6 of the 100 Mickeys that were given to my daughter when she did some work for Disney a few months ago. Are they good ones to have?

(sorry for so many ???'s)

Thanks. :)

Believe me, there are a lot of wonderful child pin traders. Sometimes you can just tell from their behavior -- how they act, what they like, what they offer for what you have, etc. Pretty much the same way you can tell about adult pin traders.

DW Lauri and I trade for fun, but there are also certain themes each of us likes to look for. Best thing is to educate yourself on what the different pins are -- which are good for trading with CMs and which to save to trade with others collectors.

Are you talking about the 100 Mickeys series from DLR? I'm not sure how well those are trading. Maybe someone else here knows.
