I am going to Washington D.C. March 7-12 for work and just found out that I will be staying at the State Plaza Hotel. That hotel doesn't have a pool or a gym and I was hoping to swim or work out to pass the night away. What to do now? I am afraid to do anything at night by myself. Any suggestions on what to do at night in Washington D.C.? Also welcomed is any ideas, or hints, on what to do in Washington D.C. at any time. Thanks for your help.

Washington DC is Gorgeous and there's SO much to do. At night I'm not sure since I've only been there twice past dark...Once was around Christmas to see all the lights and once was New Years Eve (to a club). During the day you Must go to the...um... I can't remember what it's called...it's where a ton of the museums are (on both sides of this one road). At the top of the road is the...capitol bldg I think and from there if you look down you can see the Washington Monument (I think...it's been a while). There SO much to do in that one area.

Greyline offers a "monuments at night" tour that is fabulous !Thye pick up from some hotels otherwise you catch it from the back parking lot at central station.

Thank you. How easy is it to get around Washington D.C.? Is it easy to get lost on the Metro or is it pretty self explanatory..keep in mind that in Colorado we don't have a metro system. Thanks.

The Monuments at night are absolutely beautiful, and if you have a way of viewing them without being by yourself, I'd highly recommend that.

I thought the Metro was very easy to get around with. DH was a little less comfortable with it, though. We only got on the wrong train once, and it was very easy to correct our mistake.

I bet your hotel can refer you to a nearby Gym that will give you a daily rate. The metro is great for getting around and not difficult or scary at all.

There is a great mall out in Virginia that I take the Metro to when I go to DC on business. It's the Fashion Mall. There's a movie theatre there, and lots of stores, and a Ruby Tuesdays. There's a smaller mall across the street that has a Chevy's restaurant. I can't remember if it's at the Pentagon City or the Crystal City stop. You can ask at your hotel for directions. You won't even have to go outside when you get to the mall, as the Metro is right there.

Pentagon City has the movies, Ruby Tuesday's, and Macy's. It has many nice shops. It can be reached by the blue, orange, and yellow Metro lines. There used to be little waiting time for the Metro. I used to love shopping at the Springfield Mall which had opened a Metro stop about seven years ago. It also has movies and two food courts, and Bally's gym. Be careful around in D.C. at night, it can get rough and some metro stops are closed earlier than others. Crystal City used to have nice little shops in it years ago, but it seemed to be "deserted" after the government employees leave. Oh, by the way, Crystal City has a higher sales tax than Pentagon City and other parts of No. VA. (I used to work in retail while I was living in Alexandria.)

Of course more questions keep popping in my mind. I was wondering how close Union Station is to the State Plaza Hotel to possibly get tickets to the Monuments at night, and if there are any close Metro stops near the hotel. I am flying out of the Reagan airport and researched that the yellow or blue lines had a stop at that airport. I was wondering how easy it is to get to the Metro from my hotel and then get to the airport with luggage. Should I take the Metro or get a cab? As you can tell I am a little nervous and skeptical!!! Also how easy is it to distinguish between all the colored metro lines? Thanks for everything....I just need reassurance that I wont be lost in DC!!!!

Metro is easy and safe. They have great maps at each station, as well as attendants that can help.

Georgetown is a hopping area at night. There are so many people and places open at night you would be okay.

The museum area is the Smithsonian. They are closed at night, but well worth your time to visit in the day.

I think there is a Metro stop inside Pentagon City Mall. That is in Va, but not far into VA.

The monuments are very beautiful at night. You would likely enjoy the tour.

I just looked up the hotel.. You are in Foggy Bottom which has its own Metro Stop, and is, I believe, the stop for Georgetown. There is plenty of activity and shopping in that area.

If you have a chance, the National Zoo is not too far and is free. It is a nice place to jog or take a walk in the morning.

Just FYI--you can purchase Gray Line tickets online before you go. If you are an Auto Club member you get a discount. We really enjoyed the After Dark tour. Pentagon City does have a Metro stop and a very nice mall--our hotel was connected to it. We also went to Ford's Theatre to see The Grapes of Wrath--check their website to see what's playing when you're there.
As you can tell, we had a GREAT trip to DC--don't be intimidated by the Metro--it's a wonderful way to get around.:D

You guys are great. I knew I could get some help here on the DIS. I found out that my room has a kitchenette. Does anyone know if there is a grocery store close by my hotel to pick up a few goodies to cook up? Also I was wondering how far my hotel is from the Reagan airport. Thanks for all your help.

Check the Smithsonian web site before you go. I think most of the actual museums and the zoo are closed in the evening (budget cuts). The monuments are viewable at night, but inside exhibits (like at the Washington Monument) are usually closed.

The metro is very easy to navigate. And most locals are happy to help you figure it out. If you don't understand, just ask. They also have attendant up near the entrance of all the stations (usually in an enclosed booth).

Pentagon City is a very nice mall. When you get off the metro, just follow the signs into the mall itself. There's a place to go out to the street before you enter the mall.

Crystal City is nice during the day, but definitly empties out at night and on weekends. When I was detailed there, I was shocked at how deserted it gets, and was uncomfortable walking in the underground then.

As far as the hotel, if it's close to Foggy Bottom, you could take the metro there, but you'll probably have to transfer. I'd recommend a taxi to and from your hotel, just for simplicity since you'll have luggage. Rates are regulated, and are reasonable for a big city. Metro is great for sightseeing trips though.

Foggy Bottom metro is about 25 minutes metro ride from National as I recall. Taxi ride would vary depending on time of day. As the crow flies, it's probably 15 miles or so? As far as groceries, if you've got a kitchenette, there are probably small things for sale at the hotel. There are fewer big grocery chains in downtown, usually small convenience type stores.

Have a great trip.
