What do you all do to keep your little ones (under 6 mos) safe from the sun while you're in WDW? I know you should keep their skin covered in lightweight clothing, but I can't find anything that seems light enough and I don't want him to overheat. We'll be going in May so it will be hot but not horrible like the end of summer. Of course I'll keep him in the shade as much as possible, or in the stroller with the canopy, but even a few minutes here and there will add up quickly- so what do you do? Thanks!

Subscribing - hope to hear some good tips too - baby is due tomorrow - we leave for trip in 36 days - long story - aghh! Any time now would be good little boy!

can you find white cotton clothes? and most definatley a wide-brimmed hat... and keep them under the canopy as much as possible! but i would still also slap on some kid's total sunblock... and try do it 30mins before dressing to give it time to settle...

i found this on cancer research uk

Remember to take extra care of children
Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children, no matter whether they tan easily or not, should be protected from the sun.

Children (like adults) with fair or red hair, pale eyes or freckles are at most risk. Keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight, especially around midday.

Ten tips for protecting children in the sun

Use shade
Keep babies in complete shade: under trees, umbrellas, canopies or indoors.
Cover them up
Dress children in cotton clothing that is baggy, close-weave and cool. Oversized T-shirts are good for covering most of their skin.
Use dry clothing
Remember that wet clothing stretches and can lose up to half of its UV protection – put children in dry clothing after playing in water.
Protect shoulders and necks
Don't put children in vest tops or sundresses if they are spending a lot of time outdoors – shoulders and backs of necks get easily burned.
Wear sunglasses
Buy good quality, wraparound sunglasses for children, as soon as they can wear them. Sunglasses don't have to be expensive brands, but toy sunglasses can do more harm than good.
Find hats they like
Encourage children to wear hats with brims, especially if they are not wearing sunglasses. The wider the brim, the more skin will be shaded from the sun. SunSmart children's hats are now available to buy online.
Use sunscreen wisely
Apply factor 15+ sunscreen 15-30 minutes before children go outdoors. Then reapply generously once outside to be sure of good coverage. Don't forget their shoulders, nose, ears, cheeks and tops of feet.
Remember sunscreen washes off
Always use waterproof sunscreen (factor 15+) when children are swimming or playing outdoors with water. Reapply after towelling.
Don't forget school times
Remember play times and lunch breaks on summer school days too. Give children a hat to wear and, if they can't apply sunscreen at school, cover their exposed skin with factor 15+ before they go.
Remember you can burn in the UK
The Great British sun is quite capable of burning your child! Take extra care at home as well as abroad.
Know the shadow rule
If your shadow is longer than you are, then you are safe from the sun. When your shadow is shorter than you are tall, the sun can burn you.
Set good habits for the future

Remember, children spend much more time outside than adults do. By putting these tips into practice you will protect your children now and reduce their risk of developing skin cancer in the future.

LOL, wow! Congratulations and good luck. My son will be 9 weeks (or older if he decided to come a little early, which I think he may) when we go. Here's some pixie dust for a safe and soon delivery! pixiedust:

You might want to check with your pediatrician because I *think* that they changed that "under 6 month" no sunscreen rule. If I remember correctly, my pediatrician had said it was ok to use a little on my youngest child (she's now a year old). This was a big no-no for my first two kids but after my middle child got horribly burned on the beach under an umbrella at around 2 months old, I put a little on him too. I was willing to chance the "dangers" of sunscreen after poor DS had blisters from sunburn on his face. I still feel guilty that I didn't realize he was burning. I really thought he was safe under the umbrella :confused3

We lathered DD up in Copertone babies sunblock, on her face as that's what saw the most sun and some on her arms and legs. We also put her in light weight clothing and hats. Plus when she rode in the stroller she had the sunshade. When she rode in the snuggli pack and was sleeping DH would drape a very lightweight cloth diaper (I'm talking cheesecloth light) over her so that the sun wouldn't be raining down on her head.

They do make sunglasses for babies too. I have found them at Babies R Us and Target (you can also find them by doing a search for Baby Banz) and they ahve a velcro strap that adjusts to the babies head size. They come in infant and toddler sizes. These have been great for the pool too. Oh, if you are in the swim section of Target you can also find floppy water hats made by speedo which are light weight and great. HTH. :wizard:

Hello,
We took our 7 week old baby to WDW and bought an sun cover extension that you put over the shade already attached to the stroller. We got it at babies r us and it is made by kiddopotamus. I think it cost $15.00 or so. I have never had so many moms come up to me and ask me where I bought that.
Good Luck
Kerry

I didn't read the replies, so I may be repeating. If so, sorry. They have changed the no sunscreen under 6 months rule. It's best to still not use it, but when outside you do need to use it.

Other hints: Use light clothing--material & color. Wide brimmed hat. Baby sunglasses. Keep shaded (get a full UV cover for stroller if possible--it will help keep the inside of the stroller cooler too). A light weight blanket (and not all cotton blankets, even with holes, are) to cover baby (like while in a front pack) when sleeping. stroller fans.

My pediatrician said the same thing. That babies should wear sunscreen, that is. I asked if it needed to be specifically for kids and he said it did not. The best thing would be to talk to your pediatrician and see what he/she says.

I bought one too by kiddopotamos called a Ray Shade. I used it for my 4 year old with a MacLaren umbrella stroller but you could use it with any stroller that has a shade. It was really great-HUGE coverage but folded up really small. Here's a link:

def use sunscreen and last May it was really hot...hotter than the previous May (we regularly go in May and live in FL)....onestepahead.com has some great sun gear for infants along with towelettes with sunscreen on.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I thought I had heard of them lowering the age for using sunblock, but I wasn't too sure. I'll check with my ped before I leave... I did find this California Baby Sunblock , has anyone used it before? It's pretty expensive but it'd be worth it to keep him safe. I also liked the UV protection romper and will look into that for the poolside days where we'll be exposed to lots of sun.

We took our three month old last june and did use sunblock - but before we did we spoke with a dermatologist (my wife is a teacher and it was the father of one of her students) and he gave us something. I would suggest you contact your childs doctor and see what they say

Ryan840, Madison was born on 2/26 and her first Disney trip was that May, so about the same age as your son will be. Her pediatrician said sunblock was fine so we slathered her up. Then we dressed her in lightweight, light-colored clothing, and kept her in the Baby Bjorn almost exclusively. The link someone posted to the Baby Bjorn coverup was basically what we did. Only I did it with thin cotton receiving blankets instead of that coverup thing (cause I didn't even know they existed). The blanket also helped keep the Bjorn cool cause instead of the black side facing the sun, the white blanket was instead. We also put a baby sunhat on her, it had a visor and neckflap. She stayed completely shaded and very cool that way.

Thanks justthat. It's funny how many similarities we have, but with a twist- your daughter was born in Feb and my son was born in Aug, your second is due in Aug and mine in Feb... I know I've noticed more on the moms to be thread, but I can't think of them now. I think we're close in age (I'm 26) and had our kids at the same ages, and I think we were married at the same age (22) and while our husbands were in school. I could be wrong on some of these, I know there was someone who was pretty much exactly the same as me as far as those things go, might not have been you. OK, back to the topic- what kind of sunscreen did you use?

Weird isn't it? And I think you're right, though I would never have noticed all those on my own (I attribute that to the pregnancy, whether or not it's true!). Yep, I'll be 26 on June 1st and I got married 4 days after I turned 23. I didn't realize your boys would be the same age difference as my 2 will be-let me know how it goes cause I'm a little worried about the spacing!

We use Baby Coppertone Spectra 3 (it's in a pink bottle) for Madison and started that when we first went to Disney when she was 2 months old. I tried out a bunch of sunscreens that my ped recommended, but I liked that one the best cause it wasn't super greasy, went on smoothly, wasn't really thick, hmm, and I think there was another reason but I can't remember it. We also tried Baby Blanket, Mustela baby sunscreen, and the sunscreen stick, I think Water Babies. The stick I got for her face but was so greasy and thick and when the baby is pressed against your body all day that is not comfortable for either of you (at least cause I used a Bjorn a lot, maybe in the stroller I would have felt differently, but it still looked annoying for her). The Baby Blanket was super thick and so very hard to rub into those tiny limbs. The Mustela I liked, but it had a tendency to stain her clothing, which meant more Oxycleaning for me so I stopped using that too.

Also, though I'm guessing you know this on your own from your 1st kid, but I would test them all on his arm a couple of weeks before you go. That way if he has a reaction to a certain one you can avoid that for the trip, rather than searching for another sunscreen down there.

Umbrelle is a great brand if you can get it in the states! Good for little ones with sensitive skin or allergies - very nice and light and long lasting - easy to put on, high uv protection and stays on a long time. Bit on the expensive side but worth it - took our DD to vero, spent long days in a swimsuit on the beach and she never got any sun.

I have not read all the posts, so if this is a repeat, please forgive.

As for light clothing not being found--I have noticed that the stores are still carrying winter clothes. It seems like they are taking forever to put out any spring clothing yet. So wait a few more weeks, and there should be lots of light cotton clothing for little one. And at this age, buy a couple of different sizes. Sometimes they grow so fast.
