I've visited twice in Oct/Nov and it was perfect, as in weather and not crowded. We also enjoyed Halloween there last year, they do some fun activities, so that's worth a thought!
Hawaii weather is pretty great year round. We like going in the Jan. to March timeframe to escape poor weather at home. We also like whale watching that time of year.
We have gone just about every time of year you can imagine and never had a bad trip. We are probably going back late September/early October this year (Kauai & Maui) and I have to say, that is my favorite time of year to go.
Then I would recommend January/February so you CAN see the giant waves on the north shore and maybe run into a surf competition. Both the competitions and waves are quite impressive!
We were there mid to late Oct this year and loved it! The waves were starting to pick up, and in Kauai we lucked out and saw whales on our Napali Coast boat trip. We've also been mid-Sept. and it was great, too.
Thank you for all the replies! We are thinking January may be best for us. My parents will be taking DD to Disney World while we are there and we didn't want it to be too crowded for them.

We went the last full week in March of 2012 and was perfect except a sprinkle the morning of our wedding. Then we went 3rd week of April this past year and it rained like crazy.
There's no way to predict we are from seattle so we were at least happy it wasn't freezing and windy with the rain!
