What should be done when people on welfare spend money on vacations?

It's pretty sad that people think they should be able to take welfare AND go on trips. But since they see no problem with it, people will have to do something to make them stop. But what can be done?

I don't know. It certainly outrages me, but until the government can step in and tell people how to spend their money (and yes, it is technically THEIR money despite all the protests to the contrary), then there's nothing anyone can do.

Personally, I think the government already has too much interference into our lives.

If people stopped "working" the system, perhaps the people who honestly need a boost (be it welfare, food stamps, WIC, unemployment, disability, whatever) wouldn't get screwed.

What do you propose, public flogging?

Welfare is such a paltry amount that I would assume a recipient going on vacation is doing so at a friend or relative's expense.

Whats your definition of welfare though? True welfare where you don't work, get section 8 and food stamps or a helping hand like SSI or WIC?

How would the government be aware if they are taking trips??

That's exactly what I think they are banking on. It's not like there is anything they can take back. Basically stealing, but stealilng something nobody can see or take away.

It's not stealing, except in your mind. The money is theirs to do with as they wish until the government says differently.

If they want to take every dime they get from the government and spend it on rubber bouncy balls, they can.

What are we talking about, which people? People on
WIC
Food stamps(I assume this is an understandable given)
SSI
SSDI
VA pay
medicaid
Medicare

Do you have any hard evidence that this is actually happening? Has the GAO done an audit lately? Please link. What are the statistics, please.

I refuse to get upset or worry about things before there is hard evidence that the thing actually happened. Anecdotes are not hard evidence, btw.

Why should anybody getting tax based assistance not have to put their own money towards the things the assitance is for until they are no longer getting that help?

It's like me getting a second job and not reporting the income to save on taxes. But of course that's illegal. The folks doing it anyway are sure to spend that money on things like vacations that are hard to track and can't be taken away.

It kind of depends. Are they taking a trip to visit Aunt Sally or are they spending 2 weeks at Disney World. There is a big difference. Are they taking a trip to attend a funeral or are they going to a concert (or whatever)? It kind of reminds me of a comment I heard once, "People on welfare have no business eating out." Well, what's wrong with a kid who got a great report card getting a happy meal? Nothing. However, it's not fair if welfare recipients get to take extravagent trips. JMHO of course.

So if somebody is on disability they should live their life confined to their home?

I work for DHS [foodstamps, medicaid, etc]. The government can't do a thing about it. They take their income, and expenses into account and go from there.

They can do anything they want with the money. Those that are drawing from programs that require gifts and outside income be reported though and are not doing that need to be graduated to another kind of assistance, within the penal system.
