What brand is the dvd player and where did you get it? I'm looking at getting one for the car since we are driving down to FL for our first road trip with DD (will be 19month come trip). Also want to know what case you have to hook it to the back of the seat.

Thanks,
Margaux

we used a portable one two years ago and everytime we hit a bump it skipped. And coming down 95 there were lots of bumps! I am not sure what the brand was, but no matter how tight we got it, it still skipped! It was awful!!!! :badpc: (but the dvd player, not the pc).

I think I would rather have a vhs player that did not skip or nothing at all.

ours is a polaroid brand. we got it at best buy in august (around $110) well worth every penny! :) ours doesn't have any trouble with skipping

My children received portable DVD players for Christmas. The brand is Durabrand from Wal Mart. They are a good price and have worked very well so far. We have been on several long trips and have had no problems.
The players can be viewed while plugged into a wall outlet, a cigarette lighter in the car, and they can be charged.
We purchased an adapter so that both DVD players can be plugged into one car outlet at the same time. That was around $4 at Wal Mart in the automotive department.
We have the Mainstays brand cases from Wal Mart. They hang on the back of the seats or can be used as a carrying case. There is also a storage compartment in them.
Good luck!

We have a Toshiba. Make sure that you get one with the shock absorbers in it. The first one we had, didn't have those and skipped every 5 seconds. We took it back only to find out it wasn't meant to be used in the car. Why make a portable DVD player that you can't use in the car??? Isn't that the whole purpose?? :confused3 Anyway, we love our Toshiba. It has been GREAT.

We have a INSIGNIA brand portable dvd player that was purchased at Best Buy. It was $89 when we got it, and it includes the charger, the adapter for the car, and a wall outlet. It is not a "well known" brand, but it has not failed me since July. The dvd player has been in the car since it was purchased, has gone from NY to Virginia Beach twice, rode the NJ turnpike from start to end, and has rolled of the potholes here in cities of NY without fault. The carrier and holder for the dvd (which we installed in between the seats..we have a Honda Element...) are made by Caselogic. They were about $29.00, but again-money well spent. Hope it helps! :thumbsup2

I have a Mintek which I really like. I use it frequently when not on trips - while sitting in the car line at my DDs school to pick her up - I have watched many many back episodes of 24 and The Shield this way! I also have used it to sit out by the pool in the eveningds to watch DVDs. Very worth the $$$

We have a "Kawasaki Mobile DVD System with Dual 6.5" LCD Monitors - PVS1965" (Cut and pasted from Target's web site :) )

We love it. Both girls get their own screen and we have a couple plug and play video games that they would plug into the system and play. So one girl could be playing a video game and the other watching a movie. The only problem we had was we sometimes lost the remote in the back seat. ;)

I have two portable players. We got them for our 19 hour drive to disney. They were from Best buy. The INSIGNIA brand. They have a 7" screen and they strapped to the back of the front seats. We got two seperate ones so our girls wouldn't fight over which movie they wanted to watch. They were under a $100 and worked very well. They never skipped. We got them headphones so My hubby and I didn't have to listen to them. It was a lifesaver. Can't imagine not having them and having to listen to the girls fight and the "are we there yets".

Just a reminder that your laptop computer doubles as a DVD player, if you are looking to save some $$$. It's just a little inconvenient unless your rig something to attach it to the seatback.

HTH!

This is an excellent thread.

Some great information here.

I'm bookmarking this for later reference.

We have a 10" Panasonic- I bought the case specifically made for it to hang between the seats of our van (works in our truck too). Big screen, never skips- but was a little expensive.

Please remember that anything not properly secured down in a car can become a projectile in the event of a crash, especially a rollover. The carriers that have a strap to go over the seat back are not secure. The following is a quote from an owner's manual for a targus carrying case:

"Any person who uses the Targus Portable DVD Vehicle Travel Case assumes the risks, including bodily injury, casue by the presence of the Targus Portable DVD Vehicle Travel Case product in the vehcile during an accident involving the vehicle. This product has not been used in any crash tests and its presence in a vehicle may become a dangerous projectile during an accident or other sudden force upon the vehicle."

I realize the decision to use such an item in the car is a personal one, I just wanted to add that so you can make an informed decision as well.

We have an 8" Audiovox and have not had any problems with it. It behaves great in the car and doesn't skip or have audio problems.

Be sure to keep those Happy Meals strapped down. . .

Just wondering how long you had this one? We had the same one...purchased it in June for our July trip...used it maybe 10 times after that and it died. When it worked...it worked great. :confused3

Where do you live? In Massachusetts, you could bring it back and get a refund, a repair, or a replacement.

I live in PA. I tried to take it back where I got it (Circuit City). They told me to contact Audiovox. Audiovox told me to take it back where I got it!! I said I did and then they said they would repair it, but it would cost me a minimum of $100.00. I doubt I will send it back.
