'Honest' Disney Movies: What Popular Kids' Films Are Really About (ILLUSTRATIONS) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/10/honest-disney-movies_n_3417085.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

Nothing in life is as simple and straightforward as the plot of a Disney movie -- not even a Disney movie, as this parody series, created by Christine Gritmon and Nick Nadel for TheFW.com, demonstrates. What's really going on in "The Lion King," "The Little Mermaid," "Cinderella" and other favorites, if you look beyond the sweeping ball gowns and singing animal sidekicks? Scroll down to see -- and click over to The FW for more.

The Hamlet one, haha yeah. The rest: :headache:
Yeah, if you twist it just the right way, any movie can send any message you want it to. Pocahontas= White Men Are Better :scared:, Lion King 2= Romeo and Juliet with Animals (even more so than Lion King= Hamlet), Tangled= Run Away with the Man Who Climbed in Your Window. :lmao: Amusing, yes, but even more cynical than any of my college friends, which is saying a lot! I will say nice Photoshopping, though.

I have a friend who is convinced Bambi was created specifically to be anti-hunting propaganda :lmao:

That is so funny. I have said all along, that Disney always has an agenda.

See if you can name one Disney movie where both the parental units are in the movie (and remain in it, happy, not being killed or mysteriously go missing) and/or the child/children don't get ripped from the parent/s "custody" somehow. LOL

Just try. LOL Almost every movie has the "mother" missing somehow or dying, or a child gets lost etc. Even if it's just like Little Mermaid. They don't dwell on it, but where is her mother?? LOL

Granted they'd be boring movies probably, but it's still fun to try and think of one that doesn't fall into this category.

This is true, but Disney didn't make this phenomenon up. Most of the classic Disney movies are based on very old folk and fairy tales (the Grimm Brothers may have written them down in the 1800s, but the stories are much older). And very few of the children in those stories have two parents. It would have been a very realistic situation at the time these stories were originally told. Women typically had many children and died more often from childbirth than just about anything else. Many kids grew up without mothers. So Walt didn't kill off Snow White's mother--he just told the story as it has been told for hundreds of years.

Doesn't fir the "ripped from parental custody part," but both of Sleeping Beauty's parents are alive throughout the film.

Mulan. Both parents alive, Mulan willingly goes in place of her father therefore no parental ripping.

And think to classic stories. They all have these types of things because it characters conflict and drive in a character. How many books are about a kid who lives with both parents who got along swimmingly and the kid gets everything they want because they work hard.

Are we criticizing this? So let’s say Disney starts making movies with "real people" in "real situations." We already have that, it’s called Reality TV, which can never receive enough criticism...

Interesting thread ...

It has been a long time since I've seen Dumbo, but I don't remember mention of any parents.

Does anyone else think Bambi and Lion King have a similar story line, just with different animals? The forest fire in Bambi is analogous to the hyenas in Lion King.

Would not know I am still not allowed to watch Bambi and I will be 28 in 2 weeks

Mrs. Jumbo is tied up for protecting her son from children tormenting him for his big ears. His mother was there and punished for being a good mother. I still have a hard time watching that scene, it is so heartbreaking as a mother.

Lady and the Tramp
Old Yeller
Swiss Family RObinson
Monsters Inc
Cars
Toy Story
High School Musical
Pirates of the Caribbean
Underdog
The Incredibles

Nope you are right... not a single one :rotfl: and this list is in no way complete... I just got bored typing them out. But seriously... trauma like a parent dying is part of many people's real life so it is a legitimate plot IMHO... so picking on that is like complaining that too many movies are about falling in love or love lost

Monsters Inc- you don't see parents at all in this.
Cars- or this
Toy Story- there's a long standing rumor that Andy's parents are actually divorced but as Andy isn't the main character you could still argue this one.
High School Musical
Pirates of the Caribbean- again, no parents are featured here except in Stranger Tides and then it's only one.
Underdog
The Incredibles

Another I thought of is Brave.

Disney movies are all about love and A kid showing their independence but also realizing their need for others. It works and the plot basics is good for a general audience.
