What makes a dog a lap dog?

For all you animal lovers, a question, what makes a dog want to sleep in your lap? Every dog I have ever had has always loved to sleep in my lap or beside me. My beagle use to wait for me to sit down just so she could crawl up in my lap and she weighted 60 pounds

The dog I have now weights 12 pounds and could care less about laying in my lap or even beside me. He is full of play and very loving but whenever it comes to sleeping he will look for any place other then someone to sleep on.

It just makes me wonder why some dogs are lap dogs and not others, my sister has a lab that loves to lay all over you and sleep and my little pooch won't sit still long enough for more than a back rub?

My lap dog weighs #107:lmao: I think it is 25 or under or least that was part of the rule at the condo we lived at at. 25# or under "lap" dogs were ok.

We have a 40lb dog that doesn't care to sit in our laps, my son has a 70lb dog that loves to sit in our lap. Go figure. :confused3

Both of mine are lap dogs. The lab mix weighs about 95 lbs and she used to get in our laps. Now because of hip problems, she stays off furniture though. Our younger dog, about 30 lbs, would stay in our laps all day if we'd let her.

Any other dog I've ever had wouldn't get in your lap to save their lives, but these two love it.

I had a lap dog who decided she wasn't a lap dog anymore! I had a surgery a few years ago and didn't let her on my lap during my recovery. She got used to sitting elsewhere! Ever since then, I've had to lift her up and hold onto her if I want her on my lap.:sad1:

We have a 11 pound poodle, a breed known for feisty intelligence, that climbs all over us and loves to snuggle.

And we have a 20 pound shih-tzu, a breed designed to be the epitome of "lap dog", that hates to be picked up or cuddled. (He does love to sleep on our clothes, however.)

Don't ask me. This page of pics more or less says it all.

Ok that was the cutest thing that I have seen on the dis in a while!!!! :lovestruc

Thanks! The wife sometimes gives me grief about how much the poodle (her name is Lily) is "in love with me." While both animals are affectionate with both of us, she is definitely a little closer to me, just as he (Bongo) is a little closer with the wife. Strange, huh?

When I was pregnant, every dog I ever met, wanted to be right next to me. I was told it is a protector thing in dogs

:confused3
