What kind of vacuum do you have?

I am in need of a new vacuum and was intrested in what you Disers were using. Any recommendations?

I saw the Dyson thread and all the rave reviews, but I honestly do not have $500 to spend on a vacuum cleaner right now.

I am looking for something easy to use, quite, affordable and NOT bagless - it makes me sick having to clean them out.

What vacuum are using? Can you list pros and cons?

And where can I go test these vacuums? All the stores have them on selfs, I would like to give them a try before handing over $200.

We have a Kenmore canister vac. I like it, especially the floor attachment. I am pretty sure Sears will let you try them out.

I am planing on stoping at Sears tonight just so I can look at Kenmores. I have read good reviews.

I have the kenmore cannister -I like the cord that winds itself up.
Sometimes the vacuum seems a bit cumbersome.
I also have another vacuum( we have a tri level house) a Sanitare -it is good for carpet -no attachments -just does an excellent job on carpet. They look like old fashioned "hotel" vacuums.

The consumer reports likes the Sears Progressive and a Hoover Wind Tunnel Ultra

Think about if you want bags or bagless. I really don't like cleaning filters -so I wanted a bag. Some people hate buying bags and really like bagless.

Yes, the canister vac can be cumbersome. But I have finally after 13 1/2 years of marriage convinced DH that it is his job to vacuum and mop.

I have a dyson and they are great. Not as dear here in the U.K. though if you are paying $500 . Also there after care service is second to none. The called out a couple of months to update a part in my dyson washing machine all as part of the service. :thumbsup2

We have 3 vacuums--one for each level of the house. In the basement we have an old Hoover Windtunnel, upstairs a Panasonic something-or-other. It was the most expensive of the 3 vacuums and is well made, but I'm not so crazy about it. Our main level vacuum is another wind tunnel--self propelled. I like it a lot--very easy to push with the attachments onboard (which most have no days). It's heavy but since we don't carry it up and down the stairs that doesn't matter. It also has the dirt indicator, which is especially good when the kids are vacuuming--they can see when the green light comes on and the area is clean. It was rated high in Consumer Reports.

We have a Kenmore upright and it does a pretty good job. I personally prefer an upright with a good attachment for corners but they usually don't do as well as a canister. I'm pretty happy with this one though.

Beware the Sears salespersons. They may do their best to talk you into the most expensive model they have. It was almost comical to watch in our case.

We have an Oreck and love it. Had a Wind Tunnel cannister and it weighed a ton. The Oreck weighs eight pounds and is easy to carry upstairs. It also has two speeds so changing from carpet to Pergo is no problem. You can try them out at the Oreck store. Good luck. Finding a vac that you really like is a pain!! ;)

Someone at worked raved about their Oreck, so I went to the Oreck store during lunch today, but was not impressed. My first thought was that they looked ancient. I liked that it was lightweight, but overall I thought it was too simple for the price tag of $400. It didn't move smoothly in my opinion, and there were no attachments. How am I suppose to clean the egdes of the room?

Thanks though, and your right, I can not believe what a pain it has been to find a vacuum. :sad2:

If you try Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond try to find a coupon. They send out 20% off flyers here all the time--but do exclude some large ticket items.

I hate, loathe, and despise my Kenmore Powermate canister vacuum! I just checked and it is labeled as a "Whispertone" -- that's a joke also. This vacuum is horrid. Before we had it 6 months we sent it back and Sears replaced the motor and other parts. My house is under 2400 sq ft. I am unable to vacuum the entire house in one day. I can choose upstairs or downstairs. If I try to do both the vacuum smells like it will catch fire. The stair attachment was replaced when we had the motor replaced, but broke the second time we tried to do the stairs. Every second or third time it is used, the carpet attachment must be torn apart and fixed. And just like the mandate with the Gremlins about never, ever get them wet--never ever let the vacuum come in contact with rug fringe. Oh, how I hate this horrid thing! Maybe I should vacuum my whole house and burn out the motor--then I can get a new one!

Believe what a previous poster said about the Sears vacuum sales people. This is the first time I really feel I got taken in on a sales pitch. It is possible I got a lemon--but I will never own another Kenmore vac.

I wouldn't want ot give you the name of mine as a referral.

It really sucks. :rotfl2:

This is the one that I have and I  it!!! But it is bagless. I like the bagless feature. I :furious: changing bags!

Sorry I have a Kirby and when we bought it 12yrs ago it was $1500

I once had a nice Hoover Canister vacuum and it worked great.

We bought it from Direct Buy a few months ago and love it. It's got a hepa filter and the same green light indicator that T&B mentioned. DH researches appliances to death, and this measured up for him. The plan was to get a Dyson, but Direct Buy doesn't carry them.

Check out local thrift stores for some cheap $5 outfit. It'll probably be 100 yrs old but the old ones work ggguguuhhhhhhrrrreeeat!

I have spent the day researching vacuums. Is this a Hoover Savvy??? After seeing it on the Good Housekeeping seal of approval list and reading that it is good for pet hair I have almost decided on a Savvy. I am hopeful that it works on wood floors as well. The dog hair is driving me insane. :crazy2:

Yes, it's a Savvy. The thing is awesome, but HURTS when you accidently walk into it!

No pets here, but the torque it seems to pull makes me think it'd have done a number on the dog hair we used to get off my lab. Amazon had it on sale for about 20 bucks more than the Direct Buy price last week.
