Awk I burn fairly easy... we're heading to AZ on Friday. What kind of suntan lotion should I get? I'd like to tan still but avoid burning.

I would buy the Coppertone Oil-Free lotion - at least an SPF 30. What will you be doing in Arizona? I have such fair skin that I never tan so I just go with the highest SPF I can find. Have fun! :wave2:

I never tan so I always use SPF 45 or higher. Good luck on finding something that will let you tan without burning.

I don't think that any lotion will always let you tan but not burn. That has more to do with how long it takes you to burn and how long you stay out in the sun.

The most important aspect of making any sunscreen effective is applying it correctly. You should apply it 30 minutes to an hour before you go outside, and you should apply LOTS. The "average" adult is supposed to apply 1 oz. If you have an 8 oz bottle, you can only use it 8 times. It should be applied so thickly that you can't rub any more into your skin.

If you apply it correctly, an SPF 15 should be fine. Any number over 15 supplies a lot more chemicals and very little additional sun protection. The reason the higher numbers are so popular is because most people don't use enough, so they need higher numbers to make up for it.

Even with sunscreen, you will eventually burn. Try to stay out of the direct sun as often as possible, especially between 10:00 and 4:00.

kermit, thank you for your information. When I used to work in a restaurant baking pies, just the heat from the ovens would cause my arms to get so red it would look like I had sunburn and it would stay that way for well over an hour. I burn really really easy that is why I always buy 45 or higher.

We're going job hunting!! :p and vacationing... getting away from family (as sad as it is).

Thank you on the sun lotion. I rarely ever need it here  heheheee.

Playskool is the best.

I've used it on my dd every year & she's never burned, even in the strong Orlando sun.

I get it at the Right Start.

Bullfrog. SPF 36. Spray Sport Gel.

I am fairskinned, of Celtic extraction, and people have told me, 'quite pasty skinned' :p .

This stuff is about as close to waterproof as you can find, and since we discovered it, no one in our family has suffered from any burns. I also love it because it's a spray, and when DS gets his short summer haircut (#2 buzz with clippers) I just spray his head so his scalp does not burn.

Banana Boat Kids, spf 30.

My boys get a beautiful tan and I don't burn!(I don't really tan either  )

I use Coppertone for kids on both DDs and me! SPF 30 usually. It kept my blue-eyed, blonde, porcelain-skinned DD (then 22 months) from burning at WDW in Aug of last year.

On myself, I also use a "for faces only" spf 45 for my face and I wear a hat outdoors. Sun does not touch my face if I can help it!!

I use Australian Gold spf 30 spray gel. You are from Alaska, so you must be pretty pale. So of course you'll want to be careful for the first few days. I always wear some type of sunscreen anyway.

I've always wanted to visit Alaska. It's so cool that you are from there. You must have incredible scenery, and wildlife.:sunny:

I am Irish and Swedish for the most part... a bit of russian thrown in there. I am not pasty white but close LOL

Where do you find this Bulldog? Is it at a store?

Looks like a 30-36spf is what I am looking for.

Bull Frog is the best sun screen I have ever seen. It really works and the spray is perfect for getting the kids as the run by!;) I understand it also helps with sea lice. I have bought it at walmart. We will not use anything else at the lake when we are on the boat all day.:D

That's too funny!
I like to call my Scottish skin alabaster.

Lachesis--I have found it locally here at Walmart, Walgreens, Target, etc. If you are not close to any of those, you can also get it online at drugstore.com

I find that we like the spray better than the gel, but the gel works great too.

 Sea lice???? Icky!!!!

I use a brand called Shade - SPF45. I use it in WDW and still get a bit of color but it really works! And how do I know that.... I missed a spot :smooth: :sunny: :sunny:

And I have found it most anywhere sun lotions are sold.

Good luck in Arizona. It will be quite a temperature shock for ya

DH SWEARS by Bullfrog gel. Will not use anything else. He's a pale redhead that burns walking to the car at the mall (back of his neck, literally). Its the only stuff that works... 36 SPF, I believe.

Its pricey, but worth it. We find its cheapest at WalMart usually, but Target and our grocery store carry it too.

Wow thanks sounds like Bullfrog is the way to go!

Another Bullfrog fan here...developed by surfers to protect them in the water. It's great...I haven't burned since I began using it and I spent lots and lots of time at the beach and on the water.

Another testimonial from a "fish-belly white" kind of gal.
