What kind of gifts do you make?

I have been making family members crocheted afghans. Heavy ones using two skeins of yarn at a time. Also making one for friend's birthday.

Made a few scarves recently for birthday gifts.

I'm not at all crafty.

But some cool gifts I've given--

- in 2012 I got my husband Lunch with an Imagineer for that year's Disney trip.

- This past Christmas, our gifts to my brother in law and sister in law and their families (all grown, no young kids) were and IOU for the Dessert Party for this summer's family reunion.

- My older daughter turned 14 a few weeks ago. For Christmas, here's what I did: I emailed a number of local beauty schools, and got her and a friend a 2 hour lesson on how to apply makeup. I mentioned it to 3 of my friends at work who also have young teenage daughters. We paid a total of $30 apiece-- $15 for the daughter and $15 for a friend-- and formed our own class. The girls loved it!!

-For Christmas, I also got both daughters a 3 month subcription to IBBeautiful. http://www.ibbeautiful.com/ They loved the idea of getting a box of treats.

- My annual Mother's Day gift for my 83 year old mom is a weekend away someplace. It's not a big trip... two years ago we drove to Philadelphia for 2 nights, last year we went to Amish country in Lancaster PA. But she loves having the trip to look forward to, and to getting away.



Maybe this summer I'll learn to crochet-- I would LOVE to be able to make those blankets!!

I've just started to get back into crocheting so right now I don't make anything but knots . I do hope to get better at it as I would love to make some things I've seen on Pintrest.

I don't crochet either but I have given lots of people things we have canned and they love it. My husband makes really good dill pickles and my sister and I make bread and butter pickles. We have also canned salsa, pasta sauce, and pizza sauce. You can make nice gift baskets with them or just give a jar by itself. It really isn't that hard to can, once you get the hang of it and get a few basic supplies.

For baby showers I always give a knit or crochet blanket and hat. For my neice's last baby I crocheted at Minnie Mouse hat and diaper cover bloomers. They turned out so cute!

I made beaded jewelry and give that as birthday and Christmas gifts.

I knit scarves for family and friends.

I sew baby receiving blankets and baby quilts for expecting friends.

For my nieces I made superhero capes, using unicorns as the super emblems, so they could use the power of the unicorn to save the world.

I also make hairbows for different girls in my life. (Nieces, students, ect).

When we were little we gave my aunt a few wooden items decorated with shells - things like a tissue box. My mum made her a picture too - a frame filled with shells (including a crab shell - he was tricky to find intact!). They're all at her beach house and look fantastic.

For my grandfather's 93rd birthday last week my mum gave him a DAD frame that we papered and then put a picture of the two of them in it from when she was little. He's really hard to buy for (what do you give a man who just sits in a chair all day), but he loved it!

I've also started up card making recently.

I knit scarves, hats, and I'm working on my first afghan. I recently made homemade chapstick (out of beeswax, coconut oil, and fragrances) - those turned out really nicely. I made homemade vanilla for my mom for Christmas, and I make terrariums with succulents in them and give them away.

I like to do homemade gifts for some people but not for others - one year DH and I decided to do a "homemade Christmas" and I knitted 16 sets of hats and scarves. Some people loved them, but others (mostly DH's family) poo-pooed them. So we don't do homemade for them anymore.

I make subway art signs and frame them. Print them out at Costco. Total cost less than $10 and I personalize them depending on what people want.

I make knitted things, mostly. Baby items, hats, and mukluks are what most people ask for. I also knit purses and had so many requests for them that I sold quite a few, which was an unexpected bonus!!

Right now, though, I've got a lot of people asking me to make them mukluks. I only like to make those for family members I'm close to, because they're a lot of work! I like to make them with a personal touch for the person receiving them. I just made a pair for my oldest DD who likes ravens, so hers have ravens on them.

I also make food gifts and have made things like sugar scrubs as well, I also cross stitch. I lean more towards the jewelry as it is easier and faster to make. It's also generally cheaper. lol
I've got a recipe for red wine sea salt that I want to get made before this weekend so I can give it to DBF's Mom as a birthday gift, that and possibly some smoked sea salt as well. She likes to cook so I thought she might like those, I also have a necklace I made with her in mind that I might give her as well. She can be challenging to shop for. lol

I had to google mukluk. Very nice! Do you knit them?

Yes, I do. Here are some I made for my daughter and niece before I added the soles. The Christmasy ones are way too big for the model so disregard that!

I make salsa in August, and give that as gifts. I also made a sugar scrub that went over quite well last year. I made vanilla in the past too I'm cheap, cheap, cheap!

I am in school learning to be a goldsmith. I can't afford gold but it only takes me a few minutes to make a simple pair of sterling silver earrings. That has been my go to gift lately. Because I fabricate everything myself it keeps the cost down. It's really been great to always be able to give my friends something pretty and shiny!
