what kind of bags have people successfully carried on?

in every trip i've gone to WDW, i've always brought a standard size 21" rolling suitcase, and a backpack which fits under the seat.

i've asked a number of airlines, and get conflicting information about whether i can still bring the same bags.

just curious what others that have travelled since september have experienced as far as carry-on bags?

I have experienced NO problems by carrying on exactly what they allow. All airlines are under a Federal mandate to allow one carryon and one personal item (purse type stuff).
If you go to the website for your airline, they will tell you exactly what they are allowing.
The airlines are allowed to be more strict than the Federal madate but, not more lax.
We flew SWA on Sept. 14th. At that point we had (between three people) one carryon tote (looks like a big purse), one back pack with a digital camera, lenses, smart media and a laptop and required cables and one purse. We encountered a "dusting" at BWI on the backpack, because the batteries for the camera looked like bullets to the xray/scanner machine.
Happy to see that they checked and the "dusting" was painless and fast.
We checked our luggage.
I went to Bentonville AR in mid October, had no problems at all, I carried on a briefcase.
There was a layover in Chicago, I went outside for a cigarette and had NO problems reentering the airport with the briefcase.
The most strident check I had was on the return leaving from the tiny airport in AR. They even made me run my boarding pass through the scanner. Worked for me, they cared. :)
Just follow the rules and you will be fine.

We encountered different procedures at both the local regional airport and Pittsburgh going to MCO and different again from MCO coming back.
My older son had a small carry-on (soft sided like a large gym bag), other son had his laptop. Everyone had to remove their laptops from the cases and turn them on -- this was true at all airports and they announced that fact. I had a small soft carry-on with everything in it in large ziploc bags so they could be looked at, and my purse.
At the regional airport (small commuter plane) they had everyone take off jackets, empty all pockets, including paper items, etc., and put them in a plastic shoebox type container. Everything went on the belt and they checked everyone with the hand scanner.
At Pittsburgh even tho' we went from one gate to another and didn't exit the secure area, they pulled people from the line for random searches -- just like the ones at the first airport.
At MCO on the way back, my son with the carry-on decided to check it to save the hassle. The rest was the same. But we saw people with large (in my opinion) wheeled bags that were allowed on with them. A lot of the stuff was taken as we boarded and "checked" into the luggage area rather than overhead bins. As we went through the security gate at MCO, my son had what was left of a soft drink in a lidded paper cup. They opened the lid and looked in!
The less you can take, the easier it will be ---- for you and everyone else!!
Have a great trip.

Depending on how "stuffed" the backpack is, they may or may not count it as a "personal item". I would be prepared to have to check one.

I am planning to take a backpack (standard size) and a 21" wheeled upright with me. But, I am going to leave the front outer part (the "large pocket" I guess you'd call it) of the wheeled upright empty just incase I have to stuff the backpack in it. If I do, I'll just take my CD Player case out of the backpack and carry it (it is probably 6" by 6" by 3") as my personal item so the backpack can properly fit in the pocket.

We flew from MHT to MCO on 11/8 and back on 11/17. We carried on a laptop bag and a digital camera on the way down, and a laptop bag, stuffed full backpack, and big Disney plastic shopping bag on the way back (2 people). I expected to have problems because my laptop bag does not look like a laptop bag, it looks like a normal messenger type bag, but we didn't have any problems at all.
