What is Your Religion?

I'm currently atheist, and have been for all my life. I've looked at many religions, trying to find a faith. Right now I'm studying Wicca. But I'll probably stick to being an atheist.

Well, my family follows Hinduism. I do most of the things basically because my parents tell me to.
It's an interesting religion and I don't mind following it while I live with my parents, but I really can't bring myself to actually believe in it.

I guess I myself would be considered an agnostic.

One just needs to look at the Irish Catholics and Protestants just to show how badly messed up everything has become with denominations within just Christianity.

Islam has the two sects warring over who should have the right to the caliphate (descendants of Muhammed or his high priest or equivalent). Correct me if I am wrong on the reason for the differences in Islam. I remember briefly discussing the rift in World History last year and am having trouble remembering it.

I think everyone needs to step back from it all, Christians, Muslims, Athiests, etc. We can all think the other is wrong, but we should all agree we have the right to believe what we believe. If one is committed to their faith, no amount of prostlyizing and the "facts" are going to change that.

As in the war between the north and south? Religion comes into a part of it, but a lot of the fighting is people who want Ireland fully independant(nationalists) and those who still want to be part of england (unionists)

I'm an atheist.

I've not found a religion that I cared for. I've not found one that I didn't disagree with to the point that I couldn't follow it. I've studied most world religions in depth. From mythology to southern baptism, and after that, I can't view any of the lot in a very good light.

exactly.... and religion scares me! all of that stuff about sins and hell, creeps me out.

exactly.... and religion scares me! all of that stuff about sins and hell, creeps me out.

Religion doesn't scare me. But I dislike what it does to people.

People go to war, kill each other, destroy things on the off chance that their god is real and the other guys god is false. When, if you look at it unbaisedly, every major world religion is almost the exact same as everything else. Islam and Judaism are almost the exact same, now a Muslim would shoot me for saying that, but its true.

I've studied religion, and the people who follow it. Throughout history, religion went from a way to explain things to a way to control people. Thats why theocracies lasted so long. And we're still a theocracy, even though every government official will tell you other wise. If we weren't a theocracy "god" wouldn't be in our pledge of allegiance, and religious texts wouldn't be in our schools, religious signs wouldn't be in our courthouses, and our laws wouldn't be frighteningly similar to laws of a certain religion. You can only scare people so much. The worst thign you could do is kill or torture them. So how do you scare people into following your rules? Tell them that even after death some big bad wolf is going to come get them. So they follow your rules. They're good little people. Government and church were one in teh same for hundreds of thousands of years. Now, in 2007, we're still fighting this battle.

100,000 years ago, lightning struck. how does a simple mind explain it? its anger, its big, its powerful, its a god. now we know that lightning is just an electric burst. So now we've got people who miraculously recover from cancer. Is it a work of god, like lightning? or in another few hundred years will we have figured it out? There are things I can't explain, but that doesn't mean magic is at work.

Religion has caused many many pointless deaths. Its caused fighting. And why? Because people are scared about what happens after we die. So we need some reassurance that it'll be some perfect paradise. Or becuase we don't like being alone, so we want someone helping us out through hard times. Well, I think its better to think about it like, you didn't need any help. You're strong, and you did it by your self, rather than thinking that some god helped you out.

Now, I really couldn't care less if anyone read any of this, or if anyone believes what I say. I don't care if you're Buddhist or Hindu or Islamic or Christian. I wouldn't bash you for it. So I expect that same respect in return. I hope this didn't offend any of you, but if it did, well thats on you. Its just simple facts backed up by history.

I've studied religion
ok i dont mean to sound rude but it isnt about studying religion. it is about faith. no one can ( this is gonna sound so wrong but) prove that there is God but but... the to biggest "religion" is first cahtolic and the christains is # 2. yes this is true i have researched and i was told in a serman. and seeing that both pray and worship God then somethin must be right. Plus the name of Jesus Christ IS the most debated name in the entire world for centuries. the best selling book last year like every year was the Bible. The book of Revilations is comin to pass. the only things that havent happened is the second coming of Jesus. and yes wars rumors of wars famine has been going on for years but the persuction of Christains and Catholics is higher than ever. the Bible is now being called hate talk. u can believe what u want but this is what i believe

How does "you can't prove there is a god" sound wrong?

So the majority is right? Under that logic, if all of your friends jump off a bridge, it must be the right thing to do.

Jesus Christ wasn't his real name. It was a title.

And the top of the best seller list is supposed to tell me anything?

All the stuff Nostradamus said is coming to pass too.

Christians and Catholics do their fair share of persecution. You can't exactly make them the victims.

I don't know why you typed all of that out. I was simply explaining to another poster why religion doesn't scare me. You chose one line out of a 4 paragraph post and challenged that. You don't challenge the rest of it, which is backed up by historical fact.

all i can say is just wait that is all i can say. and have u been to a serman or just studied?

You're a fundamentalist aren't you?

Agnostic, since I really don't care about religion.

How can you not care about religion, and be agnostic? Agnosticism is the belief that a higher power can not be known, not that you just don't follow or even care about religion. It's an idea that people honestly believe in and support, not an excuse.

By the way, I'm an atheist.

If you read the other post I try to explain myself better.
I do believe there's a higher power.
But all in all, religion isn't something that's important to me at all.

Saxoon,

We used to be Lutheran, but because of the church politics, and now we switched to a non-denominational chruch, and I like it so much better. I was really sick of all the liturgical stuff. People from all different denominations go to our church, and we don't have a church calendar either.
